Postby kgp70282 » 07 Sep 2011, 06:22

I an a decendent of Anna Yannatell. Her parents were Frank Yannatell and Carmela Yannatell. Their other children were Mamie, Jennie, Mary,Charles, James. I just found out that Carmela's maiden name was Greco. I am reaching out to see if anyone happens to recognize these names.

Thank you so much for your help! I have heard the name Iannitelli before through my Cousin and Grandmother. I think when they immigrated here they changed the spelling, I am not completely 100 percent sure I am going to double check. My Great Grandmother Anna's Husband Frank Cherry was from San Donato Di Ninea. Thank you again you have given me something to look into! :)

As suanj alluded, the correct spelling is almost certainly Iannitelli, a name which exists in small numbers in modern Italy. See a map here http://www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/genera.html?cognome=IANNITELLI or current telephone listings here http://www.paginebianche.it/execute.cgi?ts=103&&l=en&qs=Iannitelli&btt=1&om=0.

The letter "Y" does not exist in the standard Italian alphabet. When pronounced in Italian, the initial syllable "Ia" has a "ya" sound to English-trained ears, so the reason for the spelling change is obvious. A similar change is common with the Italian given name Iolanda which is usually changed to Yolanda in the US. Go to http://www.oddcast.com/home/demos/tts/tts_example.php?sitepal, put "Iannitelli" into the text box and select Italian from the language list.
