Yanuzziello

Postby MJPierryJr » 19 Sep 2011, 01:46

My maternal grandfather's name was Antonio Yannuzziello. He was born Feb. 27, 1874. Would like to confirm his birthplace. I think it was Aversa. Do not know year he emigrated to USA. However, he married Angela Marie Acolia in New York City on July 14, 1897.

Hi :-)

Found a NYC Marriage Index listing that may be your MGF

Iannuzzelle Antonio Jul 14 1897 Manhattan 11009
Acolia Zangela M Jul 14 1897 Manhattan 11009

If you think this is your Antonio, you can send for Antonio and Angela's marriage record from NYC Vital records using the Certificate #11009 and the borough (Manhattan). It will usually provide the names of his and her parents and may give the specific place of birth.
http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vi ... iage.shtml

Where in US did they settle?

Many thanks for the indication that there was a spelling change to the name. They first lived in Trenton, NJ and then moved to Newark. He was a barber and had his own shop.

The above spelling may have been a mistake by the clerk recording the marriage, or by the transcriber who indexed the record.

It should be noted, however, that the letter "Y" does not exist in the Italian alphabet, and was often substituted for the letter "I" when Americanized due to the pronunciation...

Did Antonio have any brothers that also immigrated?

in Newark, Essex, NJ, was also a Orazio Iannuzzelli and a Nicola Iannuzzelli...
Orazio coming from Castelnuovo di Conza (Salerno province, Campania region, IT)... but maybe they was no related at your Antonio;

the problem is the surname spelling,
if is:
- Iannuzziello, most probably, the birthplace could be Pisticci (Matera province, Basilicata region)

instead:
- Iannuzzelli is a surname most popular in Castelnuovo di Conza (Salerno province, Campania region, IT)

regards,
suanj

You folks are amazing! I can confirm what you have posted as follows: Their child Angelina died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. My mother's name was Frances so she is the "Fanny" listed. The other children are my aunts and uncles (all deceased). And Antonio' s occupation shows as "barber". I am not sure if there were any brothers of Antonio who immigrated. I will inquire of my cousin if there were. The wife, Angela died young and Antonio remarried her sister so I only knew my step-grandmother who everyone called "Aunt Lucy". Many, many thanks to you both.

Using the certificate number you found I have ordered from NYC Records a copy of the marriage certificate. Again, my thanks to you for your "digging".

I received the marriage certificate today (quite promptly, I must say) and was delighted to see my grandfather's actual signature --- Antonio Iannuzzelli --- upon it. As to where he was from it only states Italy. Further, he lived in Newark, NJ but my grandmother lived in NYC. Her address is given as 210 East 111 St. By going to Google maps, and using the street view option, it is possible to see the actual building where she lived in 1897! Wow!
Many thanks again for the guidance.
Mike
