From unknown last name to Colasante

Postby A_E_Colangeli » 21 Oct 2011, 00:25

I've found a record for the marriage of my ancestors in Navelli, Luigi Federico and Carmina _____ in 1846. In the birth records of the children (at the earliest 1868), the parents are listed as Luigi Federico and Carmina Colasante. The 1846 marriage record lists "padre incerto" and Paolina Alterio as her parents. I haven't found a death record or birth record yet, or anything on Paolina, so I don't know what information those have.

Can anyone tell me what happened here to go from listing her without a last name to listing her as Colasante? Thank you.

Can you post the images? It really helps us to look at the original document...

Looks like the only way is to get her birth record says she was 30 in in 1846 so her birth year is around 1816 looks like there are films from Navelli,for that time availble at FHL that would tell more.

Hi,
it is possible, that, between the marriage date and the first child birth date, Carmina was recognized by biological father, and so she had Colasante surname.. so the Colasante surname was listed in all further records...
just a suggestion,

@adelfio: I intend to order the microfilms for the 1816 timeframe sooner or later, and since I never found her death in the 1845-1910 records, I'll try writing to the office in Italy and asking.

@suanj: This is what I'm hoping for, haha. I'm really hoping her death record in particular will tell more.

Thank you both.

In some of the towns where I have searched the abandoned baby girls were not given a surname, just the boys. Surnames were added to the girls at the time of marriage if the law needed it in that particular year.

Hello again, all. I've found Carmina's death record, as well as that of her mother. In her death record, Carmina is listed with her mother's surname, Alterio, rather than Colasante, as she had been listed with before. Her mother's says "di Sebastiano Colasante" after her name. She isn't listed with a last name, but in the index for the year, she was "Paolina Colasante", and yet it still gives her parents: Andrea Alterio and Angelarosa Tiberi(?). Anyone know what's happened here?

Paolina ALTERIO death: (daughter of Andrea Alterio and Angelarosa... unbreadable maybe your suggestion, Tiberi could be right) widow of Sebastiano Colasante

Carmina ALTERIO death: (daughter of Paolina Alterio and unknown father)widow of Luigi Federico

probable explanation: Paolina Alterio, unmarried had Carmina and given Alterio surname; after Paolina married at Sebastiano Colasante and maybe had other children;
Carmina remained with Alterio surname on the birth act, marriage act, death act; when Carmina married at Luigi Federico, on the child birthacts, the informant give as baby mother name: Carmina Colasante but that no correct, because she never was adopted, but just because Sebastiano Colasante was as a "stepfather"... and the clerk wrote so on the baby birthact...
just my idea,
