Is this an Italian surname? Or maybe German?

Postby tawg » 18 Nov 2011, 17:12

Hi everyone,

Everyone here has been so kind and helpful. Well, I am onto a new dilemma with my Italian ancestry, which I am hoping to figure out :D Mods: if this is in the wrong spot I do apologize!

So I was going through Italiangen.org the other day (fabulous site! it has records for almost all of my Italian relatives who came to New York), and stumbled upon something quite interesting for me.

My other set of great grandparents (not the ones I am applying for dual citizenship through), were both born in the US to German parents and some other nationality. I've never been quite sure which nationality it was though. My GGF's name on this side was Adolph G Brauner. I could never figure out what the last name of his bride (Marion V Orr) was, because no records ever show up when I type in her name. On Italiangen.org, through the marriage section, it states her full last name as Orrosinski! Now I am wondering, I am confident this is NOT Italian, unless it was written or translated somewhere along the line wrongly. Interestingly enough, on Ancestry I found a census from when she was a child - but again, the last name says Orr, not Orrosinski. Her father went by the name of Frank (or Francis) Orr.

Is there any chance this could be an alternate spelling of an Italian surname somehow? I highly doubt it. It seems to me like it could be Polish or maybe even German or Russian? I am having no luck finding anything regarding this newly found last name (surname). I can not locate birth certificates, census records, or immigration/naturalization records because I can not access ancestry.com in full.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thank you Suanj! You are very helpful!

Now my question is, why would Marion put an entirely different surname on her marriage certificate (Orrosinski)? Something is not right...

I looked at Italiangen.org, and there were 3 women total who had this last name before marriage. However, there is no birth records for any of them! Very strange.

Last name First Name Month Day Year of Marriage
Orrosinski Gertrude Nov 9 1926
Orrosinski Jeanne M Nov 17 1926
Orrosinski Marion V Jun 19 1926

Yes, I understand, but the marriage record is a transcription, maybe by marriage certificate you can find more details helpful for your search...
