WWI Navy Records

Postby decbell1 » 27 Nov 2011, 05:38

I am looking for any directions on my wife's great grandfather.

I know that he served in the Italian Navy during WWI.

His name was Mario Jack Buono. He was born in 1905 on the island of Itschia.

I am fluent in German, but don't really know any Italian. If someone could point me in the direction of online records, or an address that I could write to. My wife's grandfather only knows his father's name, and that's about it.

Hello and welcome to the forum! :-)

If he was born in 1905, he would have been between 9 and 13 years of age during the first world war. Are you certain of this date of birth?
And could you tell us if he married? Wife's name?

I have located this military record (which was begun when a male child was born) for a LUIGI MARIO BUONO, born April 18, 1906, to GiovanGiuseppe Buono and Irene Cigliano in the comune of Ischia, district of Pozzuoli.
I post it ONLY FOR POSSIBILITY of being the person you're searching for. On this record it looks like service dates of 1925-26. However, I do not see mention of the Regina Marina - the Italian Navy. :-(

This is my wife's great-grandfather, and the information I had was from her Grandfather, so I never even thought about the fact that those dates do not match up.

He must have simply meant the time around WWI, and probably could have been speaking very generally.

I did just find his actual birth date, according to his Social Security Death Index here in the US. It is 21 Feb 1905.

Thanks for the help. My wife's grandfather knows nothing about his dad, and does not even remember when he came to the US finally.

He was married to Mary Discala, whose parents were also from Ischia as far as I know. Mary, though, was born in New York and brought back to Italy for American citizenship. I show Mary Discala Buono's birth as 19 Oct 1907.

They had three children.
Appolonia Buono, born Feb 1929 in Italy.
Angela Buono, born 7 Jan 1931 in Italy.
Mario Neal Buono, born 18 Oct 1936 in Stamford Conn.

The Conn. Death Index has her listed as being born in NY, and my wife's grandfather has always said that they came over to NY when the mother was pregnant, and then gave birth, and then they brought her back to Italy. My records show her father's name being Giovanni Discala, being born 1867. I know that Buono and Discala are very common names on the island too.

Would it be possible for her to be put in that record that you found, even if she had been born in NY, but brought back?

Yes, it's very likely that they returned to Italy to have her birth recorded there.

Don't know if you have this...
Birth Record of Giovanni diScala...
born 14th of March 1867 in Ischia (presented at the town hall on the 16th)
Father was Luigi, son of Antonio, age 33 and a sailor/mariner.
Mother was Serafina di Meglio, age 24, daughter of Giuseppe.

Record #53 on the bottom left and top right.

It looks like Mario "Jack" Buono was born in Barano d'Ischia, a comune (municipality) on the island of Ischia...

Found this birth record ... :D :D
Birth occurred on 21 February 1905 in Barano
Father was NICOLANIELLO BUONO, 29, a mason
Mother was APOLLONIA FLORIO, his wife living with him
His full name is MARIO GIOACCHINO BUONO (you can see where the "Jack" came from)
He was presented to the official at the town hall on the 22nd by his father (for the purpose of registration of the birth)

There is a notation in the margin that states that Mario Gioacchino Buono contracted marriage in this comune with Maria Teresa diScala on March 8, 1928.

Here is the marriage record for Mario and Maria - dated 8 March 1928 in Barano... :D

Mario was 23, a farm laborer, son Nicolaniello and of Apollonia Florio, and he was born and residing in Barano D'Ischia
Maria Teresa was 20, a housewife, born in NEW YORK, residing in Barano, daughter of Giovanni diScala and of Angela Buono...

Handwritten notation at the end of the record states that the publication of banns was made on Sunday the 19th and 26th of February, and was presented to the official.
The parents of the spouses gave their consent.

I'm going to see if I can find Maria's birth registration in Barano... :-)

BTW - you can send for Maria Teresa DiScala's birth record from NY :-)

However, when I searched NY vital records for birth of Maria Teresa DiScala from 1906-1908, there were two listings for 1907 (the year you stated was her year of birth)
Do you know if she was born in Brooklyn (Kings Cty) or Manhattan?

Discala Maria T Aug 13 1907 Cert# 23817 Kings
Discala Maria T Oct 19 1907 Cert# 53888 Manhattan

You can request a copy of either or both of these records (for a fee)
