Info on Falesca/Delisco?

Postby jfalduti » 23 Feb 2012, 03:20

Hello everyone.

I am hoping that someone here would be able to tell me some common regions for the surname Falesca or Delesco or some variation of that. This was my great-grandmother's mother's maiden name.

Attached here is an image with two versions of the name: the first from my great-grandparents' marriage certificate and the second from my GGM's death certificate. Her mother's name was Isabella, not Maria- the name on the first record is incorrect so ignore it. Isabella was born in Italy about 1876 and I believe came to the US approximately 1889 or so. She married Salvatore LaMoglia in 1893 and they had their first child in either 1893 or 1894. My GGM, Maria LaMoglia was born in Pennsylvania in 1895.

I am having immense trouble finding Maria's birth info from Pennsylvania, so I am hoping to find out more about her parents who immigrated from Italy.

Could anyone tell me, first, which is the likely name? The first looks like Falesca and the second looks like Delesco or Delisco. Then could anyone tell me what areas in Italy this name would commonly be from? I have a feeling they are likely from the Calabria region but I have no evidence of that.

I appreciate any help!

Joey

This is a good site to play with versions of a surname. http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html

Yes that is indeed them. There's also a 1910 census with them as well living in the same place, but the spelling is atrocious and you wouldn't even know it's them. I believe the spelling on that is something like Amolo.

BTW, Isabella is my GGGM. Mary/Maria LaMoglia is my GGM. I'm interested in finding more about her mother, Isabella's family. Isabella came from Italy. (So did Salvatore LaMoglia). Mary was born here so I'm trying to trace her parents.

Thanks!

This appears to be the same family in the 1910 Census in Nutley, NJ - and the name is VERY badly understood by the census taker :-(

Mother is listed as MARY here.
There is a daughter MARY listed with age 14 (DOB about 1895-6) AND here place of birth is listed as NEW JERSEY

1910 United States Federal Census

oops! We were posting at the same time :-)

I tried variations of the surname for your GGGM and found that Delesca exists (though very limited) in the Naples area of Campania Region.

As for her first name...there is a good possibility that her given name was Maria Isabella, or Isabella Maria :-)

That might be a good start.

Are there LaMoglias in that region as well? It's a shot in the dark, and they did not come over together, but worth a checking out.

The first name sounds plausible, but Isabella is more consistent. But who knows what they did.

Also the family often used the last name "Moore" which complicates things.

Mary's brother, Thomas, was also born in PA. As you can see his WWI draft card says Thomas Moore, so he may have been born as either Thomas LaMoglia or Moore. Same with Mary. BTW despite what the Census says, Mary was definitely born somewhere in PA Sept 7, 1895.

I do see a lot of variations of the name on FamilySearch.org. Seems to be a lot of Falasco/Falasca/Valasca born in Italy in the later 1800s.

I see your point.

I'm pretty certain that's an F though. The F appears elsewhere on the page. There's also a T to compare it to, and it doesn't have the line through it. See image:
