Newbie Looking for Greatx3 Grandparents D'Amato and Ranallo

Post by CDamato »

Hello...
I am looking for my Great Great Grandfather's parents...this is the information I have gathered todate..

Name: Francesco (Frank) D'Amato (Damato)
DOB: 4-6-1884
DOD: 2-19-1978
Arrived from Naples, Italy via the ship Columbia to New York on September 5, 1888 and it states he was 2 but according to his death certificate he would have been 4. According to the ship manifest, no parents were listed.

Name: Alma Ranallo (Damato) - (Francesco's first wife)
DOB: About 1882
DOD: Unknown - (believe sometime in the 40's)
Arrived from Trieste and Mediterrian Ports via the ship Elysia to New York on April 10, 1886. It states she was 4 years old. In addition, a male passenger with the name A. Ranallo, was listed above her name, age 2 years.

Francesco and Alma were married when they were 18, and settled in Omaha, Nebraska area. They had 5 children, James Paul, 3-25-1904, Lena, 7-13-1907, Antonia Ann, 4-7-1910, William Paul, 10-3-1912, Frank Robert, 8-23-1914.

My ultimate goal is to find Fracesco and Alma's parents and the family we possibly have in Italy. Any informatiom is greatly appreciated!!

We found Francesco's(Frank) death certificate, but no parents are listed on that either. Even if his parents did not immigrate with him, someone had to raise him in the US....my Great Great Grampa Frank was 94 when he passed, and barely spoke a lick of English, so its safe to assume he was raised by Italian Parents of some sort here in the States...right? Again, thank you in advance, this search means so very much to me, seeing most of the older generation Damato's(D'Amato) have passed......
Thank You Crystal

Crystal,

Welcome to IG! :D

Not sure if you've seen this but it's Francesco's WWI Draft Reg Card. Shows his occupation as a police officer. He would have had to naturalize to qualify as an officer. Have you located his naturalization papers? They might give you some information.

What a wonderful website this is!! The help everybody gives is so heartwarming.....

Biff
Thank you very much for posting, I had yet to come across that document. We have not yet found his natualization papers, do you know where I can find them? I think they would be a MAJOR piece of the puzzle I am so desperately trying to solve!

Suanj
Thank you as well! That very well could be my Fancesco(Frank), seeing i can find 1920 and 1930 census of him, but no 1910 or 1900? The info I have found so far was all gathered this past Tuesday at a Family Search Center by my house here in Northern CA. How would I go about finding out if that is in fact my Great Great Grandfather and his Family on that 1900 census? And if it is, did they just misspell the name?
Again, thank you all so very much for the help, it is so greatly appreciated!!

abt the name .. surely it is mispelled... here the 1900 census
Image

seeming that the father immigrated in 1885, naturalized, wife and Frank imm. in 1888..
by a genealogic tree on ancestry.com, a bit incomplete, but sure is abt Gaetano Dì'Amato(Damato) in Omaha, NE, well the wife is Pasqualina Ragna, so or Gariboldi( maiden name?) died and Pasqualina is the second wife, or Gariboldi is wrong name on the 1900 census...

on the genealogic tree lacking some child and born after 1900 are: John (1901) Joseph Benedict (1903) Santo (1906)..
me too cannot find 1910 census, but 1920: Gaetano D'Amato(Damato)
1920 United States Federal Census
about Gaetano Damako
Name: Gaetano Damako
[Gaetano Damato]
Age: 59
Birth Year: abt 1861
Birthplace: Italy
Home in 1920: Omaha Ward 5, Douglas, Nebraska
Race: White
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1887
Relation to Head of House: Head
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Pasqualina Damako
Father's Birthplace: Italy
Mother's Birthplace: Italy
Home Owned: Own
Able to Read: No
Able to Write: No
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Gaetano Damako 59
Pasqualina Damako 56
Mike Damako 27
Tony Damako 25
John Damako 19
Joseph Damako 17
Santo Damako 14
Edna Damako 22 daughter in law

the transcription is a bit wrong.. I believe that is the same Gaetano in 1900 census....

Biff...
Thank you so much for your help, I am so very grateful!! This site is amazing!!

Suanj....

Thank you...really, I believe that Gaetano is my Greatx3 Grandfather...I am just a little confused about Pasqualina/Goiridoldi...I think maybe it is the same women(my Greatx3 Gramma) just dont really know which name is the correct one? I just had a women call me from the Family Search Center by my house, and a cousin of hers did some digging into the Damato Family, and he believes my Family immigrated from Comune.Vinciaturo, that that is where they lived before immigrating from Naples to New York? Do you know how i would go about finding that out? Again thank you so so so very much!!

Hi the exact spell is VINCHIATURO... yes it is possible because in Omaha was some people of Vinchiaturo; I made a search some year ago.. D'Amato is a surname of Vinchiaturo also; abt Pasqualina/ Gariboldi who know? Pasqualina ... I read that her maiden name was Ragna (in USA) but I believe right spell is Ragni....
however sure D'Amato birthplace could be Vinchiaturo... here a picture of 1950 abt Vinchiaturo peoples in Staten Island NY and you can read that it was also a Frank D'Amato

Image

so maybe D'Amato could be right...
if this suggestion is right you can try in Vinchiaturo civil records by LDS microfilms

Registri dello stato civile di Vinchiaturo (Campobasso), 1809-1910 Vinchiaturo (Campobasso). Ufficio dello stato civile

Deaths, miscellaneous documents, marriages, banns, marriage documents, citizenship records from Vinchiaturo, Campobasso, Italy. Text in Italian. Some years missing or out of order.

Crystal,

For the Ranallo side of your ancestry, you might want to try calling the Omaha Public Library. They do have a genealogy question line--For genealogy reference questions, call 402.444.4826. Looks like Francesco and Alma married sometime between 1900 and 1905; their marriage license application might contain parents' names and places of birth. Folks at the genealogy desk should be able to let you know how to get a copy,

Ranallo also is a name from Vinchiaturo. See WWI Draft Card below for a Michele Randallo from Omaha born 1895--cousin or brother of Alma?

WOW  .....
Biff...thank you, thank you, I believe you are right about Ranallo being of Vinchiaturo origin. I'm not sure about the Ranallo you mentioned, but will look into it asap. I do know on the ship manifest when Alma immigrated, there was another A.Ranallo listed right above her...a 2yr old male. Maybe a Brother?

Biff and Suanj, I cannot say "Thank You" enough :D ! This site and both of you are AMAZING! If it wasn't for you guys, I'd still be wondering who Frank's parents were. I've also been doing some searching on Ancestry.com, and believe i found a second cousin(Frank's brother Antonio's grandson) My next step is to figure out Alma's parents, Gaetano's parents, and see if we have any Family over in Italy...just the thought of having Family there makes me so excited!
Again...thanks a million for you time and help!!

Hello...again :D

I also found an immigration record for a Gaetano Damato on Ancestry stating that he arrived in Sept of 1888, on the ship Scotia. He states his place of origin as Stalie? Could this be my Gaetano? Once again, thank you

I believe that Stalie is the bad transcripotion of Italie( Italy).. i found this trip and also stating Stalie( Italie/Italy):

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Gaetano Damato
Name: Gaetano Damato
Arrival Date: 8 Aug 1885
Birth Year: abt 1863
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Place of Origin: Stalie
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Destination: New York
Port of Arrival: New York
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States
Ship Name: Scotia

but I believe that is not your Gaetano because your Gaetano was born in 1861 and not 1863..
I believe that Gaetano immigrated in 1885 and in 1888 the family...

suanj
