Looking for information, etc. on Filippi, DaiZovi

Postby typeogirl » 03 Apr 2012, 16:42

Hello everyone. I am very new to genealogy. I was hoping for advice and guidance looking for information on my great-great-grandmother and her husband and their children. They are all from Schio, Italy. My gg-grandmother's maiden name was Clorinda Filippi born 1861 and her husband was Pietro Dai Zovi born 1858. They came to the US and settled in the Hudson County area in NJ. I do not know if they left anyone behind, but I think it is most likely they did.

I am looking for ancestors, relatives, birth, death information, baptisms, that kind of thing. Where can I look and how can I start?

Does anyone think that the names Clorinda and Filippi and Dai Zovi are unusual. Do they have any kind of significance? I just think the names seem very unique.. but I could be wrong.

Thank you everyone! I am so excited to see what I can learn.

it's possible they did it... on the payment site Ancestry.com the Ellis Island arrival manifests database goes from 1820 to 1957... I found a 1927 arrival manifest for Pietro Dai Zovi returning home from a trip to Italy, so most likely he came back to visit relatives..

From Ancestry.com:

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957

Name: Pietro Dai Zovi
Arrival Date: 14 Nov 1927
Birth Year: abt 1858
Age: 69
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Genoa, Italy
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Conte Biancamano
Search Ship Database: Search the Conte Biancamano in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database

Dai Zovi is a very rare lastname in Italy... on the italian white pages there are only three persons named Dai Zovi in all Veneto region and all three of them are living in Schio. I'm sure they are relatives...

Another relative:

9 october 1920

Filippi Catterina age 26, female, single, leaving in Italy, Schio her father Carlo Filippi, going to West New York NJ to join her uncle Pietro Dai Zovi (so possibly Carlo Filippi, Catterina's father was Clorinda's brother)

Hi Everyone, just wanted to say hi and update my post. I have not gotten very far in the last two years with my research on the DaiZovi family.

Even though the leads on Virginio Pegararo and Catterina Filippi are intriguing, they have not yielded me any information as of yet.

I was just put in touch recently with two distant DaiZovi cousins. I learned 3 things. 1. My DaiZovi family was from a section of Schio called Magre - I am wondering if there is a church (there is probably more then one), that I can get records from. 2. My great-great-grandfather said that the DaiZovi family originated from Spain. 3. My great-great-grandmother (maiden name Filippi) said that her family was originally from either England or Ireland, and the family moved to Schio and changed the last name of Phillip to Filippi; supposedly this occurred after the "great famine" and the family was victims of religious persecution. At this point I do not know if she was born in Schio, or if she was born in England or Ireland and came here with her family as a young child.

I do know that in England and Ireland there were phases of Catholic persecution. I wonder if they came from Ireland, went to England for relief, then moved to Italy; or if they were English and moved to Schio; or if they were Irish and moved to Schio. Has anyone heard of Irish or English immigrants relocating to Italy and starting new lives?

I think at this point my best bet is to try to get the LDS microfiche for Schio, since genealogical resources for Italy are so scarce.

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas or suggestions for me?

Thanks.
