Search for ancestors of Carmelo Marchello (b.1856) in Sicily

Postby smarkello » 12 Jun 2012, 04:45

My parents came from San Piero Patti, Messina Sicily. I have found birth records of my father (b 1893) and his siblings - all born in SPP. However a search of birth and marriage records of SPP from 1820 to 1910 has shown an absence of Marchello from SPP prior to 1870. Records past 1870 show 10 Marchello families in SPP, only one of which I can say is my family. I am trying to find birth records of my grandfather Carmelo, and other Marchello patriarchs in SPP, but do not know from whence they came. Where can I find information regarding my grandfather's birthplace? I am trying to find out if my grandfather had male siblings and how we might be related to one or more of the other Marchello families who resided in SPP in the late 1800s.

Hi,

Carmelo Marchello never came to the US. He was born on May 24, 1856 (location unknown), died on December 4, 1918 in San Piero Patti, Messina Sicily. He is listed as the father on each of his children's birth records from 1882 to 1893. All of the children were born on Campagna Maria in San Piero Patti, Messina Sicily. His wife was Concetta Gaezza (Gaieza ?). Concetta was born on May 31, 1856 (location unknown) and died in San Piero Patti on November 30, 1918. Concetta is listed as the mother on the birth record of their 7 children. Five of the 7 children emigrated to the US between 1904 and 1921. I have the ship manifest for each of the children.

I have searched through the index of births for each year of the LDS microfilms from San Piero Patti (SPP) beginning with 1820 to 1910. There were no "Marchello" names listed prior to 1870 for either births or marriages. Between 1870 and 1910 I found and assembled the families of 10 Marchello's living in SPP. Where did they migrate from and do they represent one or more related families? How are they related to my grandfather Carmelo? When I solve that puzzle, I will be able to determine which Marchello's we are related to in the US, since I have the names and access to the ship manifests of all Marchello's who came to the US from San Piero Patti.

This is just a clue...
I found a 1873 marriage in San Piero Patti for a Michele Marchello :

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... n212198446

then, I checked the marriage banns and found out that he was born in Sant'Angelo (possibly Sant'Angelo a Brolo?) on 13 september 1849 while his father (deceased) died on 7 february 1872 in Librizzi:

Another interesting record:

1875 marriage between Vincenzo Marchello, age 39, son of the late Giuseppe both born in Sant'Angelo:

Sant'Angelo di Brolo is far only 15 miles from San Piero Patti ...

Michele Marchello's father was Giuseppe Marchello, this is Giuseppe's 1872 death act in Librizzi:

Death Act number 8 -Year 1872 - Librizzi

Giuseppe Marchello died in Librizzi on 7 febraury 1872, he was 56 years old, farmer, resident in Librizzi, husband of Rosaria Capolingua, born in Sant'Angelo, son of the late Giuseppe:

I believe that Sant'Angelo di Brolo is the correct place...

hello, i am looking for a man called james lacastra and stanley sidney lacastra. They were in london in around 1930.
James was married to a lady called doris bronson and they had a daughter in 1930 and Stanley had a son in 1929.
james and stanley were probably borthers and were both seamen in merchant navy, one of which was in chatham kent.
i think sicily is involved with this name for sure!
Any help will be gratefully received.

I found your story fascinating and have never used this site before. you sound as though you know what are doing, i have hardly anything to go and these men appear to not want to be found. I am sure they have died now but so difficult to trace.
