Hi, I'm in the process of searching for my Grandfather's family. My Grandfather (Costanzo Tavano) was born on March 25, 1893 in Panni, FG, to Michilena Mansolillo and Donato Tavano. I have no birth/death records on his parents and would like to find them. I believe I still have relatives there. I will be traveling to Panni in March '05 --- if you have any tips or direction, please let me know (where I should write to obtain these records -- I know that will be tough -- or when I visit if I should go directly to City Hall?).
The civil records for Panni (1809-1899) are available on microfilm from the LDS church. You can go to their website www.familysearch.org to find the family history center nearest your home. The films rent for about $4 a month. With the microfilm you can review all the birth, death and marriage records for your family in Panni. Then while you are in Italy you can get more recent records after 1899. I would prefer to spend my time seeing Italy and family, not looking at old records, if I had a choice. Sometimes it is the only way to get information. Try and get the historical stuff out of the way before you go. Enjoy your trip.
Tavano.....do a search for all posts started by me. My mothers side of the family is from Panni as well. I asked alot of questions on here and got alot of good answers, as well as information. If you like you can email me as well, and maybe I can help.
I also got a printed letter from someone on this board that I am using to send to Panni to try adn hook up with some relatives. I can send you a copy if you want it.
Heres a shot in the dark....any of these names cognome from Panni look familiar
those are some of the last names in my family from Panni.
A couple days ago I sent out about 10 letters to possible relatives in Panni. I got their names off the internet phonebook: http://en.comuni-italiani.it/071/037/telefono.html. I wrote my letter in Italian and also English...hopefully I'll get a response. I'll post if I do.
Pepino: I know you mentioned that your relatives settled in Newport, but there is a website called the "Young Pannese Social Club" that originated back in 1893 or so in Providence, Rhode Island. If you post in the guestbook someone may respond (I actually did that and got some help).
Actually the first Pannese site I came across was the Young Pannese Social Clubs site. I did talk to some but came up with nothing. If you got any returns on your letters yet Id like to hear abut it. I am prolly goign to send some out this week.
If you seen any of my other posts, it turned out someone on the site actually knew my grandfather on the other side of the family that I never met, so I have been researchign that side fror a while.
http://members.aol.com/donaldd227/YPSC/Panni.htm thats a pretty good website too about Panni. Nice pictures and stuff. Check it out. As you siad, the village is so small both of us have to find links in our families seperately....as well as possibly together.
