NYC vital records

Postby carmine1917 » 02 Jul 2012, 22:54

Has anyone used Vital Check to get a birth record for NYC? Vital Check does not give an option that it is for genealogy. Has anyone ordered Birth or Death records lately?

Depending on the year you are looking for, you may be using the wrong service. You may want to take a look at this site, http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vi ... home.shtml
It has directions and information you need for obtaining certain vital records, including birth records. You may want to contact NYC Vital Statistics as the records may be unavailable internet submisson for genealogical research. Just a thought.

Also, if you go to http://italiangen.org/ you can search nyc records yourself. You can't see the actual record but can get the record number to place the order.

Here's a link to NYC records that may answer your questions.

http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vi ... home.shtml

The online method involves third parties. I haven't used them because to use them, they require genealogical information, that if I had it, I wouldn't be searching in the first place. There are regular mail forms that can be sent directly to NYC records where they will do the search (first two years searched for free, extra $3 for each requested (by you) year searched by them. Takes several weeks. Waiting for our first reply.

I went there, the only way to get a birth record is if you have the death record, that is the rule. Doesn't matter if it is a birth record from a 100 years ago.

You might be able to get a death record from Social Security. Think it will cost you about $75 (the ones you see for free on genealogical sites don't have much information) . However, I would check with NYC first to verify that they would accept a SS death record. Wouldn't hurt to ask if they would accept the limited free one, but I doubt that they would.

No, it has to be a death certificate.

Are you sure about that??? I was able to get a birth record for my grandfather just a few weeks ago from NYC vital records? I found the record number on the site I mentioned earlier (it is not just italian records) and then went to vital records to order it. Sorry you are having such trouble. If you want to send me the name you are searching for I can go to that site to see if I can find it for you? Kristine

Yes, I am sure that is what they told me. Did you have your grandfather's death record? What year did he die? Did you use Vital Check on the internet or mail the form?

My grandfather was born in 1905 and died in 1961 (maybe it has something to do with the year). My dad had his original death certificate but I did not in anyway have to prove that or who I was. I simply found the birth record number from italiangen.org and then went to this site: http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vi ... home.shtml
and ordered a copy online.

Your grandfather's birth record falls under "Prior to 1910" you can get birth records prior to 1910 at 31 Chambers Street also.
