Scanza/Pugliese Family from Benevento

Postby kscanza » 17 Jul 2012, 23:18

Hi, I am looking for any information on my family who I believe is from Benevento...my great grandfather Guiseppe Scanza born April 1858 (parents Michele Scanza and Caterina Scola)and my great grandmother Marianna Pugliese born about 1875 (parents Vincenzo Pugliese and Antonia Bruno). Can anyone steer me in the right direction??? I would greatly appreciate and help/advice. :D

Do you have any documents about them? As Benevento is a town as well as a province with many Communes, it is important to know if they were from the town of Benevento or from some village around it.

No...there are no documents but I am trying to find out from my dad and aunt if they have any more specific information on the place. Both Giuseppe and Marianna died in NYC when my dad's dad was very young and he did not know much about them. They have always been a big mystery for our family.

I did ask and no luck...neither of them know anymore. My dad did say that his father spoke "the Neapolitan way"...I am so unfamiliar with Italy that I do not know if that is helpful at all or not :)

Did Giuesppe Scanza have any siblings that came over to the states?
Maybe thats the route to go to find his birth town?
Do you have his death record?

I have seen that census record before and do not know why it lists Feliciana Jordana as her mother...I have a marriage certificate for Giuseppe and Marianna from 1899 in NYC that has both of their parents listed...that is where I got the names Vincenzo and Antonia for her parents. I do not know of any siblings. I really appreciate you all trying to help. This is great :)

I believe that the right surname spelling was SCANGA and not Scanza as appearing on the US records...

I believe that your ancestor was born in Calabria region and not in Campania region( Benevento is in Campania region).

I found the italian draft registration card

Hi in Cosenza archive it are some image abt the records ( no abt marriage record Michele/Caterina), but ... "poor" quality..
your Giuseppe Scanga draft registration card

Image
(3° box)

sentenced because it fails to report for military service on 8 nov 1876; sentence crossed and enrolled in the army

This is amazing!!! You are fantastic!! Does that military record mean that he "skipped out" on his duty??
