Looking for my grandparents 1940 census

Postby JoeC » 04 Aug 2012, 14:28

Hi -

I've been trying to find my grandparents on the 1940 census, but have not had any luck. The information I have for them is Thomas Cosgrove, born March 18, 1914, and Margaret Cosgrove (maiden name Carson), born April 10, 1922. Both were born in New Jersey, USA, and I believe they were living in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1940.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks -
Joe

Hi Tessa -

They were married January 1, 1938, but I understand they were married more than once in different religions, I believe. They did not have any children in 1940.

Thanks -
Joe

thanks for the additional information, Joe :-)

Can you tell me what his occupation was? Maybe I can find him in a City Directory...
That will provide an address, then maybe we can search the 1940 census by address.

Hi suanj -

That's very interesting. Yes, that is my grandmother you found, Margaret Carson. Evidently, the information I have regarding when they were married is incorrect. If it is not too much trouble, could you upload a copy of the 1930 census showing her and her family. I am able to obtain the 1940 census image, but not the 1930. Also, would you be able to help find my grandfather, Thomas Cosgrove? As I said previously, he was born on March 18, 1914. I believe he was divorced before marrying my grandmother, but at this point, do not really know whether or not this is true.

Tessa: regarding his occupation, I believe he was a chef, but don't know if that was later in life or in 1940.

Hi suanj -

Thanks for the copy of the 1930 census for my grandmother and her family. I am somewhat confused regarding the 1940 census for her that shows her as single. I have a certificate of marriage for her and my grandfather dated April 28, 1938. Like I said in an earlier post, I have been told that they were married several times under different religions.

Regarding my grandfather, I have a copy of his baptism certificate, so I know he was born in 1914. I have seen the copy of the 1930 census showing an entry for Thomas Cosgrove in the Hudson County Catholic Protectory, and I believe that it was most likely him, but I have not been able to obtain any official records from the church to be completely sure. I wrote several letters and spoke on the phone with various people, but it seems like no records exist at this point in time.

Thanks for your help. It is always greatly appreciated!

Joe

Hi, I know that a John Cosgrove married at Mary Ryan ( the her maiden name by a genealogic tre on ancestry.com but it are some big error)

I believe he was born around 1863 and Mary around 1869/70 no doubts that the 1900 census and the 1910 census are abt same family, same home address...

John died after Thomas birth .. I believe...
the family in 1920:

1920 United States Federal Census about Mary Costrobe
Name: Mary Costrobe
Age: 40
Birth Year: abt 1880
Birthplace: Ireland
Home in 1920: Hoboken Ward 4, Hudson, New Jersey

Mary Ryan Cosgrove died in Hoboken on jan 1931 ( by genealogic tree on ancestry.com.. hoping correct info ant the death) but maybe she was in bad health before also, because Thomas was in the Hudson County Catholic Protectory in the 1930...

hoping helpful,
