Luigi Zampella

Postby JoeC » 29 Aug 2012, 13:44

Hi -

I'm looking for some help in finding out some information about my great-grandfather's family, in particular his mother, father and siblings. I have found his immigration record on the Ellis Island web site, but can not upload the attachment of the manifest. His name is Luigi Zampella. He was from Caserta and immigrated on Dec. 17, 1898. His information is shown on line 12 of the manifest. In column 16 of the manifest, it says that he is joining his mother, Adelaide. Along with Luigi, there are two other Zampella's shown on lines 10 and 11, Guiseppe and wife Michela. It looks like in column 16 they are joining a brother, Francesco.

I have not been able to find out any information about Luigi's mother Adelaide. Since he was joining her, I would believe that her immigration record should be prior to his arrival, but have not found anything. Also, I'm assuming that Guiseppe is possibly Luigi's brother, but am not sure. I would think if this were the case, then Guiseppe would be shown as joining his mother Adelaide in column 16, too?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks -
Joe

Hi Joe! :-)

You can upload the image of the manifest using an image-sharing site such as http://www.postimage.org
Just copy and paste the "Thumbnails for forum1" URL here at this forum.

We will be happy to help you search for information about your family.
Can you provide some additional facts? approx. dates of birth, and where in US they settled? Names of spouses and children?

As for Adelaide...she would have traveled using her maiden name as was the custom for Italian women.

Have you looked for a 1900 US Census record for her? Or for Luigi?

You can try looking for a marriage record on ancestry.com in Caserta for Giuseppe Zampella and Michela that could help you find out.

Two things Joe is it possible that Adelaide Zampella married in Caserta or in the USA after the birth of Luigi Zampella.
Also she would be about 15 or 16 when she had Giuseppe Zampella (abt 1874) since she was 20 yrs old when she had Luigi Zampella (Oct 1881)
You might have to get Adelaide Zampella birth record on microfilm from Family History Library Registri dello stato civile di Caserta (Caserta), 1809-1929. Births, marriages, deaths, miscellaneous documents, marriage documents, citizenship records, supplements (births, banns, marriages, deaths)
Have you ever found her in a census in the USA?

Luigi's brother Giuseppe Zampella/Zambella
abt Nov 1872 - before 1916

from this 1916 New York, NY Directory it appears that Giuseppe spelled his surname Zambella
his wife Michelina is listed as a widow of Joseph living at 211 Mulberry

Hi Valarie,
just a my perplexity..
-Adelaide was 20 old in 1881 (Luigi birthyear),
-so Adelaide was born abt 1861
-if Giuseppe was also a son of Adelaide and born in Nov 1872 (or 1874 by ship's manifest) ..
-well .. seeming to me Adelaide was a bit very young for to have Giuseppe...
-maybe Giuseppe was no the Luigi brother...

what you think?
Hugs,
suanj

Hey suanj :D !
I agree completely - Adelaide is a mystery.
I was going by an "assumed" relationship on the Dec 1898 ship manifest where Luigi is listed after Giuseppe and wife Michelina.
Perhaps they were cousins? All three are bracketed together on the manifest.
Interesting that Giuseppe and wife Michelina made a trip in Aug and in Dec...
No sign of Luigi or Adelaide in NY in 1900 or 1905
Thank you and a Big Hug!
Valarie

I thought the same also so I looked for the marriage record of Giuseppe Zampella in Caserta
POSSIBLE MARIAGE RECORD in 1898 right before they immigrated
1898 June 26th marriage in Caserta of Giuseppe Zampella age 24 born and residing in Caserta son of deceased Raffaele Zampella and FILOMENA Tescione married to Michela Quintavalle age 20 born in Maddoloni daughter of Domenico Quintavalle and Filomena
Lombardi
So I dont think Luigi's brother

Thank you everyone for all of the information. So, it would seem that Luigi's mother, Adelaide, was not married when she gave birth to Luigi when she was 20 years old. I agree that Guiseppe was most likely a cousin of Luigi's, not a brother.

I have been able to locate Luigi with his first wife, Antonette, on the 1910 US census. Antonette passed somewhere between 1918 - 1920, and I've located Luigi with his second wife and family on the 1920, 1930 and 1940 census. I have not been able to locate Luigi's mother, Adelaide, other than the information that you have all provided here.

I appreciate all your help!

Thanks again!

Hi Joe, :-)

Was this the 1910 Census in Hoboken you referenced above? Louis is a butcher?
If this is the correct census, Antonette had borne 2 children, but they did not live.
They had been married for 3 years. Maybe you could find a marriage record in Hoboken, Hudson County?

There is always the possibility that Adelaide returned to Italy... :?

Hi Tessa -

Yes, that is correct. Good idea about finding a marriage record in Hoboken. Maybe it will help provide some clues.

Thanks -
