First name Fiora - Italian?

Post by KSRattazzi »

Is this a common first name? When I looked up the origin, what I read says this is a Gaelic name. I find it extremely odd that my ancestor (born approximately 1850) would have a Gaelic first name in Italy.

Fiore/Fiora

Here is the "origin" as it appears in "Italian Baby Names" at this site

And, YES, there IS a St. Fiore :-) (martyred in Catania!)

How far back do you think the civil documents in Baveno go? I am having luck there, just not sure when my luck will run out.

Fiora is a variant of the name Flora. There are also diminutives: Fiorella (female, very used)e Fiorello (male, uncommon) and then Fiorenza and Fiorenzo. And of course, as already stated, there is Fiore, meaning flower.
If you read Italian you can find the saints named Flora at this link
