Antoinette Famiglio(a)??? "Family"???...What is going on?

Postby lloiaco » 13 Sep 2012, 23:36

Hi everyone,

This topic is related to the topic entitled
"Vincenzo Giacomo Loiacono b.1890 in Modugno, Bari, Puglia"
as Antoinette Famiglio(a) married Vincenzo Giacomo aka James Loiacono when she was 16 years old. But this is an entirely different mystery altogether.

Antoniette Loiacono was my paternal great-grandmother, her death record states that she was born on 26 Jun 1904 and died on 16 Mar 2000 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. The death date I can vouch for because I was at the funeral.

The "story" which I heard from my family is that Antoinette's maiden name was Famiglia. Her parents immigrated from Sicily and arrived at the port of New Orleans, Louisiana. The date of arrival is not known but the story goes that Antoniette was born in New Orleans Lousiana, so an arrival just prior to 1904 is a good guess. She married Vincenzo Giacomo aka James Loiacono when she was 16 years old in Chicago Illinois.

However, proving this "story" has not been very successful. The records that I have found for Antoinette are a 1930 and 1940 US Cenus, in which her know husband and 3 children are listed. However in one census she states she was born in Illinois, in the other she states Louisiana, but in both she states that her parents were born in Italy. She does claim that her first marriage was at 16. I have a birth record for her first child which supports this claim. However, I cannot find a marriage record anywhere in Illinois for her marriage to Vincenzo Loiacono in about 1920. But, I have found a record for such a marriage in July 1920 in Lake County Indiana. Perhaps this is because she was 16 at the time an Illinois did not permit 16 year olds to marry but Indiana did?

In both the birth record of her first child and the Indiana marriage record, her last name is Familgio(a).

I cannot find a birth record at all for Antoinette. (I have checked Louisiana and Illinois records). Nor can I find any evidence of her parents, Familgio(a) in any Louisana or other immigration records.

But here is what is so odd to me.....I found no records of this surname, Familgio(a) or variations, anywhere. It is not a valid Italian surname. In English it means either Family or Familiar.

So this is where I am stuck. I have a story about my great-grandmother but I can prove very little of it and her maiden last name doesn't seem to exist as a real Italian last name.

I am looking for any proof of her maiden last name and where her parents immigrated from (Sicily?), what their names were and if her parents did arrive in Lousiana, what happened to the family in between their arrival into the US and the 1930 US Census showing Antoinette as a married mother of 3 living in Chicago Illinois.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)
Thank you

Famiglia exists as a surname in Italy. There are 2999 Famiglia's in the phone book today.

I think yours to finD someone well versed in genealogy in both places (nawlins' and Indiana) to find out the legal marriage age.

hi by a genealogic tree on ancestry.com a Antoniette Famiglio ( right spelling) was the daughter of Basile Famiglio (Birth 12-25-1868 in Brolo, Sicilia, Italy-Death 05-10-1910 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, United States

and of Maria Scaffidi (Maria Scaffidi
Birth 8/5/1878 in Italy-Death 1933 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA)

children of Basile and Maria:

Antoinette Famiglio no data
Guiseppe (Joe) Famiglio 1895 – 1974
Maria Famiglio 1898 –
Nunzia Famiglio 1902 – 1968
Richard Famiglio 1905 – 1982 ( born with first name of Diego)
Rosa Famiglio 1908 – 1983

by Louisiana births another baby was Giuseppina(Josephine) born on 10 jul 1901 and died infant.

This Antoniette is the only Antoniette Famiglio that I found in Louisiana..

the above names sound familiar ..?

Thanks for the info about the surname....Apparently, the sites I was searching are not so reliable and when I was doing the search I now realize I was spelling the name Famagilia not Famiglia. There seem to be few Famagilia's but many Famiglia's. And also doing a google search for surname Fama(i)glia is really confusing...since it means family...I get references to every other Italian surname except Famigila. Newbies will be newbies

Hi suanj

Thank you for the information! The time period is certainly correct and Sicily to New Orleans does match the "story" I was told. I will dig into the people you have listed to see if I can find any evidence that this is my Antoinette and her family. Unfortunately, I cannot say if the names are familiar or not. I know nothing of Antoinette's life except the for what is in the "story" I described in my first post. I have no hint of what here parents names where, what her siblings names were or even if she had siblings. And at this time I can only rely on documentation to get any of this information.

Thank you again

ok, I understand... however the Antoniette name is just in a genealogic tree on ancestry.com;
by 1910 census nobody Antoniette appearing in the family:
1910 United States Federal Census about Basile Cannie
Name: Basile Cannie
[Basile Camille]
[Basille Camille]
Age in 1910: 42
Birth Year: 1868
Birthplace: Italy
Home in 1910: New Orleans Ward 3, Orleans, Louisiana
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Head
[Self (Head)]
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Mary Cannie
Father's Birthplace: Italy
Mother's Birthplace: Italy

Mary Cannie 32
Joseph Cannie 14
Mary Cannie 11 ( b. 25 Jul 1898)
Josephine Cannie 9
Nancy Cannie 7
Richard Cannie 5
Rosie Cannie 2
the transription of surname is very wrong; right: Famiglio...

it could be possible that her first name was Maria or Maria Antonietta( in italian) and she used Antoniette??
I found one baby girl born in New Orleans with a similar birthdate (+-)

but the first name was Maria!
so the mystery continue...

Hi suanj

It is possible that her name was Maria Antonietta. But I have never heard of anything with in the family that this was the case.

However Antoinette had 3 children... Mary, Joseph and Bennie.
Following naming conventions, the first son would be named after his
paternal grandfather. Which we now have decided that the father of Antionette's husband, Vincenzo, was named Giuseppe. If Antionette's father was also named Giuseppe then this might explain why the second son was named Bennie (and not again Joseph), which right now I have never heard of a Benito anywhere in the family.
But then again, following naming conventions this could mean that her fathers name was Benito.

The fact that the first daughter was named Mary (Maria) might suggest that Vincenzo's mother was named Maria if they followed naming conventions (but I do not have any hint of Vincenzo's mother's name as of yet). But if they are not following naming conventions then it could mean that Antoinette named her first child after someone that meant something to her, perhaps a mother Maria or her own first name.

This is all extremely circumstantial though.

Also at some point before Antoinette turned 16 either her family or just her moved to Chicago IL, where at 16 she married Vincenzo. Not knowing very much about the history/sociology of the time, I do not know the likelihood that Antoinette would have made a trip from New Orleans to Chicago before she was 16 alone.

All very loose clues I guess, I have nothing close to real evidence.

Thanks again

Hi Valarie and suanj,

I suspect you are right. It fits together very nicely. But would lean
towards the Birth Record that suanj found to be Antoinette's sister. For two reasons, 1. The evidence I have found suggests that Antoinette was married when she was 16 and she had her first child at 17 so she was likely born in 1904 and married in 1920 in Indiana(see other post for Vincenzo Loiacono) and 2. I have never "heard"(within the family) that Antoinette had any other name than Antoinette. My life and hers overlapped for many years. There were numerous times when I was around her and the family and I never once heard anyone call her by any thing other than Antoinette (circumstantial I know but I think reason 1 is very reasonable).

This is great, so perhaps Vincenzo is in Cook County Ward 17 when the 1920 census was taken, but perhaps not on Ohio street anymore...I will re-search the 1920 US Census in Chicago Ward 17 and see if I can find anything.

WOW
Great finds Suanj!
I agree Lucia's 1st husband was most likely Giuseppe Famiglia/o, died bet 1903-1909 probably in New Orleans.
Perhaps he was also from Sicily (Milazzo, Messina?)
I've heard the weather in New Orleans is similar to Sicily?
