Great War Info

Post by EWillson »

Hello,

I am trying to find out as much info on My Great Grandfather as possible. He served in an alpini regiment during the Great War and the Second World War. His name is Marcellino Fiori and he was born on the 3rd of Sept 1899 in a town called San Vito De Cadroe.

I have his ww1 uniform and on the shoulders of the jacket it says 111. I have his alpini hat as well and it looks like it has a 1 in the middle of the bugle. According to my Grandmother he was captured and sent to a POW camp in Hungary during ww1. On his return back to Italy the ship he was on was torpedoed and he was one of the few that made it off the boat.

If anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Eric

As for the elite mountain warfare soldiers of the Italian Army - "Alpini"
Here is a great link on Wiki

And another about the 1st Alpine Division ..."a World War II light Infantry division of the Italian Army which specialised in Mountain Combat. The Alpini that formed the divisions are a highly decorated and elite mountain corps of the Italian Army consisting of both infantry and artillery units. "
It includes an image of the Coat of Arms of the division... :-)
