LaGiusa/Sciabarrasi in Brooklyn New York

Postby MelNorris9760 » 14 Oct 2012, 02:10

I am looking for information on a Theresa LaGiusa, maiden name of Sciabarrasi, born in 1884/5 in Nicosia, Italy and emigrated on the ship Ems around 1899/1900 into New York. Possibly married Joseph LaGiusa (d. Sept 28 1952) and had a son Lawrence LaGiusa (d May 19 1939). Her death date is Feb 20, 1939. I can't find her on the Censuses and any information will be helpful.

Hi Krista!
I only posted the 1900 census to show the address where the family should have been listed
I'm not sure if anyone at that address in 1900 was related to them
You're right, according to the family's 1899 manifest brother Carmelo Sciabarrasi should have been living there too...
I also checked the 'catch-up' pages at the end of that enumeration district in 1900, the Sciabarrasi family wasn't there

Thanks so much Valerie! I appreciate all the information! As usual, it has created more questions. But all this has gotten me past a little hump where I was stopped. I am on Ancestry and as you have already dug up, my cousin, Krista is as well. She is the one who told me about this forum. I need to sort through all this information and see where it leads me next. I do use all the Census' but the name spellings was where I was stuck with the "La Giusas" You also opened up my Mary/Maria Ridolfo link as well! So much to look into.

I would love any help you could give me with locating Italian records. Are you speaking of records from Italy? or records of Italians in America? My family came mostly from Nicosia...and I would love to be able to get some info from over there...eventually. Looks like I have some more digging here in the states!

Krista, Look at the 1930 census for the La Guisa's which includes Marion and Margaret as well as their new husbands. Below them is a Joseph Messina...not sure if there is any relation to the Carmello Messina in the Baltimore census you are questioning, but just thought I'd add another layer of questions on top the ones we have now! lol. Look at my Ancestry.com for the La Guisa's I found all the census' that VJ found for us and linked them to their profiles. It wasn't easy, but it was easier than trying to find them without VJ's help!
