Sanseverino name - likely places to look in Italy?

Postby kniuhart » 15 Mar 2013, 06:14

The family still seems to think that their ancestor was named Sanseverino (not Sanseviero). So, I am now asking if someone can please tell me -- for name Sanseverino -- which areas are Most likely to be where the name is from? Would Calabria be likely? or Not?
Thank you for your help!

The death certificate for "Rosina" Lentino -- supposedly born Sanseverino in Italy -- (died) in Brooklyn NY, filled out by her son, said father was Ralph (Raffaele?) and mother Marie (Cuozzo). They thought she was from Padula, but if that was true, she would have been Sanseviero (With Much help from people on this site, I found plenty about a Rosa Sanseviero born in Padula & her family -- except her coming to America!!)
It turns out that Rosa's husband Vincenzo Lentino WAS born in Padula, I have WWI registration record that conforms to birth record in Padula (etc.) and information about his family.
But Rosina/Rosa born "December 26, 1882" and "arrived on ship Burgunda ca June 1884" (OR 1887 as it says in one census record) -- this does not show up on Castle Garden/Ellis Island records. Rosina had reported that information in her request for naturalization papers.
The family also said there were "shreds" of a marriage document for the 2nd of ???? 1897; they think the marriage was in Brooklyn NY (I tried Italiangen.org to find marriage in New York; it was not there.)
The family thought that Rosa/Rosina Did Sail from Naples, but that she was from Padula. I do not know how she could have Any information about where she was from, etc., if she left before she was 2 years old.
Any help would be Greatly Appreciated! Thank you.

First, thank you for your interest -- and your reply.

I had found the 1930 record before - but no wife, so hard to guess if this could be her father. The other 2 were new, to me. But it is strange -- IF she came to U.S. as an infant, that there was no 1900 or 1910 census record for her parents; and, IF she came in 1884 or 1887, she/they should have been in the 1892 NY State census.
The childrens' names - of Vincenzo ("James") Lentino & Rosa/Rosina: Angelina (b. 1901), Mary 1902, Antoinette 1905, Jenny 1907, Anthony 1912, & Carmella 1918. (Vincenzo's parents were Antonio & Caterina....)
Can you tell what the addresses are, for any or all of the 3 records you sent? I wonder if they would be close to the places where Rosina lived in 1900 and later. (I have those census records for the Lentinos, from 1900 on; about 1915-20, they were on "Tillary Street".)
I did also look in the Castle Gardens & Ellis Island records for a Maria Cuozzo (with child or not), without finding anything similar to what Rosina put on the naturalization request.
Is my next step looking through ALL of the birth records for Napoli, in All of those churches, on the Familysearch site? (I do not presently belong to Ancestry so I could not access their sites, which you sent. But you have given the basic information, so I thank you again for that.)
But.... I Am tempted to give up!

Thank you, suanj!
I looked over the 1900 census, it did say she had 6 children, all living, and only 5 showing up at their home in 1900. (So, there Could be a Rosa/Rosina).
But I - again - looked for Ralph/Raffaele/Raphael death record (as well as Mary/Maria's) and none found. Also could not find any arrivals at Castle Gardens (I tried lots of spellings....)
Also no 1892 census record (NY State) under all the spellings you suggested, and some I just "made up". (tried Italiangen.group site for their birth/death/naturalization records....none for this family.)
I've been doing Genealogy (Scandinavian) for 20+ years....but this one has me "stumped". (But you seem to find records where no-one else can!!!)
So, I will continue to hope you may be able to make another suggestion I can try. (Thank you again for your interest....) :)

Hi, maybe this document is interesting for you:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... wc=7902155
and the Raffaele that I found is the right Raffaele, father of Rosa Sanseverino married Lentino; the right surname is Sanseverino, no doubt... the Rose sister, Jennie Castellano was born in Italy around 1885 and appearing in 1910 census on same sheet census of Raffaele Sanseverino, her father; but I believe she was born before of 1885... Maria Cuozzo Sanseverino died on 22 Dec 1910....

suanj -- You are absolutely amazing!!!
I tried to find some of the same things -- and did Not find....But you did!
The Jennie/Vincenza was reported to have been born October 1883 - in "New York" -- But the same census (1900) shows both her parents arriving from Italy to New York in 1884. So it would seem that both Rosa and "Jennie" were really born in Italy.......
And, now, please tell me -- How did you find out the date of Maria's death? and did it actually say "Cuozzo"?
(The family will be SO pleased at your findings; the Padula origin must have been ONLY for the husband, Vincenzo Lentino.... but it means they had a Lot of their information correct.)
Thank you, thank you.... :) :)

suanj --
Wow!
I have to ask -- how/where did you find those death records? That is truly great! And, the "proof" from that directory (that's a new one to me, too....) that "Ralph" Sanseverino was involved with the liquor industry....at his home address. (They may have lived "over the bar"; that was not uncommon in Brooklyn.)
Your experience and knowledge are indeed great -- but your willingness to help, is wonderful! Thank you "10 times"!

on the death record and on the will ( to click on the link that I posted in my previous message), it is wrote that Maria Sanseverino died on 22 dec 1910; by this website: http://stevemorse.org/vital/nydeath.html
the her death date was the 25 dec 1910, but I believe correct the death date on the will..
Cuozzo maiden name is no mentioned, but in USA the married woman have just the husband surname,
