My grandmother Jennie (Muscarella) Vecchio

Postby djvecchio » 01 Apr 2013, 23:18

I've hit a bit of a wall! My grandmother's name, as I knew her was Jennie Vecchio. She was married to Giuseppe Vecchio and had the following children: Lawrence, Vincent, John, Charles, Mary, Rose and Joseph (my father). My grandmother's obituary says she came from Marianapoli, Sicily. I can find NOT RECORD of her coming thru Ellis Island and I have used variations in spelling and anything else I can think of. I have a current working theory -- She came into this country as Vincenza Muscarella, daughter of Giovanni and Maria. I even think I found her birth records in Marianapoli as well as the wedding records of Maria and Giovanni. I also believe my great grandmother's maiden name was Romono (according to the wedding records). But I can find NO RECORD of either of them coming thru Ellis Island! I can see in the 1910 Census that Giovanni, Maria and Jennie reside in Buffalo, NY. This is the area where all my family, on both sides, went. But I'm going crazy trying to figure out how they got into this country! I'm presuming they boarded in Palermo. The Census says they came to this country in 1902/1903, but nothing matches in Ellis Island.

Hoping this post brings me some luck! I hate to give up!! :-)

Wow! You ARE good!! What throws me is the departure was from Naples and not Palermo. Marianapoli is in Sicily, so I presumed they left from Palermo. Was it common for people to go from Sicily to Naples to leave for the US? Perhaps ships left at different times of the year from these ports? So I'm correct in presuming that "Jennie" is the Americanization of Vincenza? Also, I "think" that either Gaetana Romano's middle name or first name was Maria, and that's how she ended up as Maria Muscarella when she came to Buffalo.

Mille grazie per sua aiuto!

Hi,
yes , it was very common that the immigrants from Sicily going to Naples for New York port; from sicilian ports, the italian immigrants in New Orleans port essentially...
Abt Vincenza first name, many italians anglicized the first name.. Jennie was used for Gennara/Gennarina, Giovanna, and Vincenza also; instead the male Vincenzo was translated in James.. Calogero becoming Charles; Salvatore=Sam etc...
I know no why...
