San Fratello, Messina, Sicily Birth Records

Postby lapsang » 22 Aug 2013, 16:56

Hi,

I'm looking for information regarding records in San Fratello, Messina. My husband's 2nd great-grandfather was born there in 1869. He moved out of the town at some point, so he will have no marriage records, etc. to look for. I have looked through the records made available by Family Search. I see that the birth records are available on microfilm for: 1820-1824, 1826-1831, 1832-1836, 1837-1842, 1843-1847, 1848-1851, 1853, 1854-1856, 1858-1859, 1860-1864, 1878-1895, and 1896-1910. It seems that there are no records for 1869?

I just wanted to confirm whether the records do not exist, or they weren't microfilmed by LDS. I know a German archive I visited had records not on microfilm, so I don't want to make the mistake in assuming that they don't exist. I don't see any information online about destruction of records, but I have seen what was put online by Messina, and the books they have are in rough shape indeed.

Any help would be much appreciated. This is my first foray into Italian Genealogy... and it's a bit intimidating! Thank you.

In addition to the records online at familysearch.org for the town of San Fratello, the records to 1865 are available for online viewing at the following link:

http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... +Fratello/

I was going to suggest that you send an email to the town, as I have found that sometimes towns have info in their registers which does not appear among the microfilmed records. However, the only email address I can find for the town is a certified one, and it is for official govt business only. This means that any email you send to it will be sent back to you as undeliverable. If I find another possible email address, I will get back to you.

Erudita,

Thanks for the reply. I have seen that website, but unfortunately, the birth records don't go past 1865. :( I see no reference anywhere, however, that they shouldn't exist.

Any additional information would be most appreciated.

Here's a mailing address for the town. I still can't find a different email address-

Comune di San Fratello
Via Serpi
98075 San Fratello ME
Italia

If you are going to write to the town, you should do so in Italian. To help you can, you can refer to one of the following websites:

http://www.circolocalabrese.org/genealo ... -index.asp

http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html

I just came across the following email address, but can't promise that it is still operable:

uffragsanfratello@libero.it
