Offices to contact for records

Post by joegov »

I am planning to contact official offices in Corleone that have vital statistics that I need in my family research. I have identified what I believe to be good form letters, but am a bit confused by the names of the different offices identified in the letters. What is the difference between "Officio di Stato Civile" and "Officio Anagrafe"? Are they one and the same, or should both be contacted? I also have an address for what I believe to be the city hall. Is this another source of family history information or are the records offices all I need. The other source I am writing is the church where at least one family baptism took place. Are there other general sources that I should contact. I am planning a trip in the fall and want to do some preliminary work before I go.
Thanks for any help you may be able to provide. I am a bit new to all of this.

Marty, you are amazing! Are there any other church records online like this one for Corleone? In particular, I am looking for

1. Sicily - the communes of Racalmuto, Cerda, Collesano, Petralia Soprano, Polizzi Generosa, Bagheria, Catrogiovanni.

2. Italy - Altamura, Grumo Appula, Rotello, Reggio di Calabria, Pago Veiano

If you go back to Livio's post it has the towns of civil and church that are on familysearch.org it will need windows excel to work
Also they are always adding churches and towns to the record list so keep your eyes open for updates

Marty.....Thanks so much for the church contact information and for going back to an earlier post. The marriage and baptism information you provided is new to me and I will follow-up to confirm the links to what I already know. I very much appreciate your help.

I am also searching for this kind of information on my family. Where is Livio's post that tells that information? My family is from Riolunato Modena Italy. My Grandmother was Cesira Luigia Contri, my Grandfather was Domenico "Venturelli" Cervi both were born around 1892.
Any information to put me in the right direction would be helpful.
Thank you

Heres the post
http://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/topic26903.html
Unfortunately Riolunato Modena online records are only from 1901-1910 for births and marriage 1901-1928 deaths at ancestry.com with a full subscription
Your researching will be either writing for records or going to a Family History Library near your home and ordering and viewing film records of Riolunato (Modena), 1806-1929 Civil registration of births, marriages, banns, deaths and supplemental documents from Riolunato, Modena. If you need help with translations of records just post here
Include indici.

Marty...thanks again for the help in locating family records...I followed the links you provided and found the original source of the information you related...on first examination of the Corleone "familysearch.org' data base it seems vast...is there some way search by particular family name???...I am, obviously, not very familiar with the site and perhaps have missed something very obvious that would help me search it...your information helped me move up a generation...thanks

The Corleone or any Italian town's digitalized civil records that you find will not have a universal index to find a family name among all the records for all the years available. However, there often is an index for either a single year or more rarely for a 10 year period. these indices may appear separately for given years or period of years which makes life easy. More often, these indices are merged with each years records one year's records following a previous year's records for multiple years, most often at the end of a year's records for births, marriages, or deaths, but sometimes, especially before 1860 if available, at the beginning of the year. Finding the image or page number where the index resides is a bit of a trial and error process. I try to go past the year I am looking for, see the record number on that page for the following year, and the number of records per two page spread (normally how these records are displayed), and then mathematically find how many pages back I need to go to get to the index for the year I want. Note - many indices are in alphabetical order by First name which is a pain, but some are by last name which is much easier.
I use FamilySearch.org sometimes to put in a name and see if anything comes up. Usually too much comes up and I use their filters (e.g. spouse, parents, birthplace, etc.) to whittle the list down. If I find something that looks like it has enough matches to be right, it may give me the year I am looking for to more quickly find the actual civil record where the digitalized records exist. Where they do not exist, they may on the photo records that you can rent from the Mormon site. I have never found an index on the photo records, so that process can be really difficult as you must look at each record for each year in Italian with no guarantee that anything is there,
