Contadino vs campagnolo or agricoltore

Post by ray1955 »

What is the different between the two words above which in my book state "peasant farmer".
Also, agricolture is stated as just farmer would like to understand in 1800 sicily what they mean.

Any suggestions?

In the area where I live Contadino is a farmer who lives off the land he cultivates. Growing food for his family and **SPAM** the surplus.
An agricolture would be a farm worker, working on someone else's land for pay or food.

A contadino would grow food for his own while an agricoltore would grow food to make business. A campagnolo namely is someone who does not live in a town and may be a contadino as well as an agricoltore.

Thanks for clarifying that Livio. I guess my mother in law should have been categorized an agricoltura then nstead of a contadina.
