Gallo & Chiavone of Sicily

Post by gallohjc »

Giuseppe Gallo born 8-9-1891 in Delia, Sicily the son of Calogero Gallo and ? He came to U.S. 4-2-1910, married Maria Chiavone, the daughter of Liborio Chiavone and Santa Salera? Giuseppe died 3-23-1971 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maria was born 8-18-1894 in Cianciana, Sicily, came to the U.S. 4-14-1909 with her sister, Gaetana, and died 12-24-1981 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maria's parents and baby brother were not permitted to enter U.S. and went to Rosario, Argentina.

Would love info on Giuseppe's family. His brother Giovanni came to U.S. in 1912 but his parents, a sister and 2 nephews remained in Sicily. And there may have been others.

In 1911 Maria Chiavone married Santo Bevacqua in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Santo died young. Maria then married Giuseppe Gallo between 1918 and 1920. Maria's mother's name, Santa Salera - unsure of the spelling of the last name. On Maria's Death Certificate it reads Santa Sale?a. Unsure of that 5th letter.

Any info on Maria Chiavone's family would be appreciated.

I checked the birth indexes for Cianciana for years 1894 and 1895 and did not find Maria. So I searched for the ship manifest and found her arrival in 1909 with her sister Gaetana. They list their place of birth as Gangi, Palermo.
And were leaving their mother Maria Salerno in Gangi.

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 about Maria Chiavone
Name: Maria Chiavone
Arrival Date: 14 Apr 1909
Birth Date: abt 1895
Birth Location: Palermo
Birth Location Other: gangi

Age: 14
Gender: Female
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Palermo
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: San Giovanni

Checking the ten-year (1886-1895) birth index for Gangi... there is only one birth with surname CHIAVONE and that is Gaetana (father-Liborio, record #479, 1891) for that ten year period ...
Here is the link to the index

Here is the link to Gaetana's birth record

Hello Helen,

From the information in your PM I was able to locate the birth record of Gaetana's sister, LIBORIA - not in 1898, but in 1897 (born 2 June 1897)
Same parents as above at the same place, Via Piedigrotta
Liborio's age is given as 36 here, and Maria Santa Salerno's father is deceased.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1340697201

AND - another sibling born in 1899, MICHELE

He was born on 23 September 1899
Father: Liborio, age 36, farmer :?
Mother: Maria Santa Salerno (daughter of living Vincenzo) :?
Place of birth was Via San Giuliano (in Gangi)

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1340697201

I checked the births from 1891 through 1900 and these are the only Chiavone births I found...

As to GIOVANNI GALLO - here is the link on Ancestry to his birth record

#128 (bottom left)
Born on 19th August 1895, presented to the official on 20 August.

All help is appreciated. As you see from my posts, Giuseppe and Giovanni Gallo born in Delia to Calogero Gallo and Domenica Mancuso. We know there was a sister but have been unable to locate info on her or her two sons. Also any info on Calogero and Domenica - when they died, their parents, etc. Tessa78 has given a lot of info but there's still more to be found. Thanks for your assistance.

I am also researching GALLO family in Delia
I have Gaetano GALLO d. before 1868. His son Giuseppe GALLO b. 1827-1832 in Delia. M. Nunzia Spaganola b.1838. I have been able to find info on 9 of their children born in Delia: (*have birthrecord)

GALLO:
Salvatore b. about 1860
Michelle b. 1866* Delia
Angelo b. 1868* Delia
Gaetano b. 1869-1870 (1870 on gravestone) ?
Nunzio b. 1870* Delia
Francesco b. 1873* Delia
Cologero b. 1875 (per gravestone)
Maria b. 1877 d. 1880* in Delia
Maria b. 1881* Delia (my great grandmother)
I imagine our GALLO's tie in together somewhere in Delia.
I have a tree on Ancestry
It is private but I will send you an invite if you are interested.

Yes, very interested. Since my earlier posts I have found more info. Giuseppe Gallo, my husband's grandfather, son of Calogero Gallo and Domenica Mancuso. Calogero son of Stanislao Gallo and Antonia Falcone. Domenica Mancuso daughter of Giuseppe Mancuso and Grazia Riccobene.

Calogero and Domenica children: Stanislao 1879-1947, Domenica Antonia 1882-1883, Giuseppe 1-1884 to 2-1884, Antonia 1885, Carmela 1888, Giuseppe 1891-1971, Giovanni 1895-1956, Giacomo 1899-1901, Giacomo 1903-1904.

I would like to see your Gallo tree and hopefully find a connection. Thanks for contacting me.
