Above, I posted the birth and marriage record of my gg gm, Carmela cusimano. From what I was told (I don't read Italian), the marriage lists her parents as Giovanni cusimano & Antonia papa. If anyone could help me find a marriage record for them, I'd be very grateful! Carmela was born in 1875 if that helps for a time frame. Thanks so much for any help in this matter!
Marriage of Giovanni Cusimano & Antonia Papa It looks like they were married in the church before they start having kids but not civil so they got married to recognize the children they had before any of them got married to make them legitimate In the written part it says they are recognizing the following children 1871 Dec 4 Vincenzo Cusimano 1875 July 24 Carmela Cusimano 1879 Aug 30 Concetta Cusimano 1882 Sept 6 Rosaria Cusimano 1887 April 30 Vincenza Cusimano 1889 Sept 10 Giuseppe Cusimano INDEX#35 1892 Aug 7th in the town of Castelbuono appeared Giovanni Cusimano age 43 farmer born in San Mauro Castelverde·and resides in Castelbuono son of deceased Giuseppe Cusimano and deceased Carmela Scacciaferro married to Antonia Papa age 42 woman of the house born and residing in Castelbuono daughter of deceased Vincenzo Papa and Concetta Mina??
Wow, thank you so much! That's the first new town on this side that I've seen. I'll have to look it up on the map. Was it unusual to be married in the church but not civilly? So both Giovanni & Antonia's parents were deceased. Hopefully they got to see the grandchildren first.
Since the sets of parents were deceased at the time of the marriage, I would assume they died in Sicily. What would be the best way to look for those records (or any of my other family there)? My resources are, unfortunately, limited to online searching as I am in the US.
Could I trouble you for some help w/ Carmela's husband? Based on their marriage date, your legitimacy theory is probably correct. I have their marriage record and his birth record but can't seem to find anything on his parents.
Something is not right on the marriage record it says Vincenzo Polimeo age 23 son of deceased Antonio Polimeo and deceased Providenza Massimo On the birth record it says Vincenzo Polimeo son of Antonio Polimeo age 47 and Providenza Bertino age 26 so I don't know what to say
I didn't notice that. Hmm, interesting! Would he have used his birth record when he got his marriage? If not, it could be possible that since she was deceased, maybe he got the last name wrong? I have marriage records (from the u.s., 1900-earlier) where names don't quite match other marriages/death records. I would think the the birth record would be the more accurate one.
Marriage of Antonio Polimeo and Providenza Massimo INDEX#55 1872 July 27th in the town of Castelbuono appeared Antonio Polimeo age 29 born and resides in Castelbuono parents ignoto(unknown) and Providenza Massimo age 24 born and resides in Castelbuono parents ignoto(unknown)
So it looks like the marriage record is the correct one. Are their birth records different (than Vincenzo's) b/c it was just a different form or were they abandoned/adopted? Sorry to ask so many questions.....I'm new w/ Italian records.

No they are before 1866 so they are split records left side civil right side church info
Thanks so much for your help! I wonder how they could record a birth record w/ no parents though.....I was trying to zoom in on the bottom of his record but all I could make out was 'un bambino nata' (a baby boy was born?)
Found these in the marriage allegati of Castelbuono Birth record of Giovanni Cusimano 1849 March 13th in the town San Mauro Castelverde birth of Giovanni Cusimano son of Giuseppe Cusimano age 33 (1816)and Carmela Scacciaferro age 30 (1819)
