Pierri/Opramolla of Serre, Salerno

Postby SynThea » 16 Apr 2005, 13:54

Hello, all!

Back again seeking birthplace/parents/siblings of Giovanni Pierri, b. abt. 1861, possibly Serre, Salerno, and his wife, Celesta OPRAMOLLA (or similar), believed b. abt. 1863 same area.

Believe they had three children born in Italy: Florinda (later Rose), b. 1882; Levie P., b. 1884 and Lizzie, b. 1887.

Immigrated to Norfolk (near Boston), MA in 1891 (not confirmed; by 1900 census). Four known children born in US.

Many sincere thanks to suanj, brujaojos, mfjp and VaDeb, who provided earlier help with different branches of same tree!

Hi SynnThea, Glad that you came back with another post!

Hey, how about the name Apramolla??? :P Sounds very close..

Even though it is a Castle Gardens ship record that we should be looking for (because of the time frame... ) I always use the Ellis Island databases to help me out... and they usually do...! BUT... Castle Gardens manifests don't give the same wonderful details as Ellis or Boston Manifests... will see what I can find through the ports of Boston with the Apramolla surname as well...

Manifest of interest below.... the name is transcribed as a woman Maria... comments by ship record keep refers to "him...his".. but writes "Nieces" next to her name...

First Name: Maria (mentions mother Celeste in section 11 of manifest )...
Last Name: Opramolla (I think it is Apramolla)
Ethnicity: Italy So. Italian
Last Place of Residence: Serre, Italy
Date of Arrival: June 01, 1912
Age at Arrival:  17y    Gender:  F    Marital Status:  S
Ship of Travel: Venezia
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0015

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipM ... 0298%2ETIF

and

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipM ... 0298%2ETIF

see also line 18 Francescantonio (another Apramolla) not sure who he is..
-----------
www.ellisisland.org

search with exact spelling shown below...

Apramolla,Angelantonio Serre, Italy arrived in 1909  at age 15
Apramolla,Angelo Serre, Italy 1911  25
Apramolla,Martino Serre 1906  37
Apromolla,Maria Serre 1903  33
Arella,Francesco Serre Arillo, Cotenza 1908  3
Opramolla,Maria Serre, Italy 1912  17
Opromolla,Carmela Serre, Salerno 1920  35
Pierro,Agostino Serre, Salerno 1906  24 (only one name -spelling close to Pierri)

mfjp

one more thing... the word scribbled next to Maria (on Manifest) says "Nieces"... so, there are other parties of interest here too... she would be traveling with an Aunt Antonia Chiamello (?) and Uncle Vincenzo Grosso...

Hello, again, friend mfjp!!!!

Since our last communication, I went back to investigate the Massachusetts records of the children of this couple I seek.

Several of their marriages/deaths give Celeste's name - which I thought was Gula from her death certificate - as Prumolla, Pramolla, Pramula, Opramola, Apramola and Promalia!!!! And while I was looking at Montoro because I had a manifest for a Giovanni from there, I never found confirmation he was the Giovanni I want.

So I think you are absolutely on the right track with the Apramola/Opramola from Serre manifest you sent. I am SURE these people are connected to Celeste. However, in a quick review of names & dates, I can't see an immediate link.

Will spend more time with them later and let you know what I can find.

Many thanks again for following up ... it's always exciting to have new clues!!

Hello, also suanj!!!!

Glad to finally have correct spelling of APRAMOLLA!

Your exceptional help with the three-generation manifest for Maria Saggese last month unlocked a massive puzzle and we are on the trail of the other side of the family!!!

It seems, however, the people I seek came over 1891 or before.

Today I will go over the list mfjp sent, compare names & dates and see if things are clearer.

Do you know if Serre records exist?

All best,

Dear Friends:

Have spent some time reviewing manifest data kindly sent by mfjp with multiple Opramolla/Apremollas from Serre.

Best possibility today seems 1893 arrival Gennaro Opremolla, age 46, b. abt 1847. He is of age to be father of Celesta (b. abt. 1863? Came to USA 1891 per 1900 census). On her death certificate, father's name given as Joseph. However, when I go to that reference, it says "no image available." Is there anywhere else to check for 1893 manifest or arrival???

1903 arrival Maria Apramolla, age 33 (b. 1870) could be Sister to Celesta. Later Maria 1912 arrival, age 17, b. 1895, could be Maria's daughter and Celesta's NIECE! Celesta had no daughter Maria we know of, and was in US several years by 1895.

Also note two 1906 arrivals: Martino Apramolla, age 37 (b. 1869) and Agostino Pierro, age 24 (b. 1882). Looks like one from each side of the family to me!

These are all just guesses, must keep digging to see if I can connect someone somewhere. Have called Franklin, MA Town Clerk where Celesta died to see if there is death record for Gennaro/Joseph Apramolla. Likely a long shot.

Thanks for all patience!

Hi!!!

First I want to thank you for the kind words about me and my genealogy services. I truly appreciate it!!!!:) It was a pleasure working for you! Hopefully we will work together in the future.

Now I have a copy of the 1893 Ship's manifest for you. I am going to email it directly to you. I don't know how to put them on the internet like Mfjp does. She's great when it comes to find info and putting it on the net. Any way, look for the email with the manifest.

Smile for me!:)

These follow-ups are encouraging!! SynnThea, I am glad that you went through the list, time consuming, but exciting!!

I always feel closer to getting what we are looking for -when done in a really great group effort!!

I am currently looking for a manifest using Elisabetta's name...

I did find one Ellis Island manifest of interest... but you would be the best judge... poor surname... though it may be Apramolla, I never stopped looking with Opramolla... or close to it...

First Name: Giovanni
Last Name: Opranoli
Ethnicity: American
Last Place of Residence:
Date of Arrival: December 19, 1902
Age at Arrival:  53 y    Gender:  M    Marital Status:  M
Ship of Travel: Lombardia
Port of Departure: Genova
Manifest Line Number: 0024

Hi, mfjp & other friends!

No luck so far on following Apramolla/Opramolla leads presented, although I have created a chart with birth/arrival dates & etc., in hopes something will make sense eventually

Have several calls/emails out - maybe one will pay off soon.

Don't know Celeste Apramolla's middle name. Thought the "P" might have come from Prumollia, Pramula or other versions of her last name that appeared later on her children's marriage records.

Will be looking at the children's births soon as possible for more name/village clues re the parents.

Thanks again all for continued help and support!

This is a wonderful "neighborhood" to visit!!! I just wish I weren't so IMPATIENT. I want to find something new every day.

All best to all,

Hi again, you have been wonderful to research with!! Please do re-post with new info and I'm sure you will find more and probably soon. I guess you are like most of us here at this forum and don't give up easily either!

At least you follow up on everything all of us have posted for you... which really creates a positive research "domino effect"...

Yes! you did mention that name earlier on... will keep that in mind too... my own Great Greats used both given and middle names as given names on the most important documents... what a research headache...

SynnThea, thought I would post the manifest you had mentioned earlier on... looks like you picked a good one!

And take a look at the passengers below his name...! Are they traveling with Gennaro??

Petronella??? (that name does sound familiar.. :P ) Rachele age 38 from Calvello (Potenza) .... ? Another new town of interest...

When I saw the name "Petronella" I thought it was the name you had been reading on the other documents...

Line 144 - Maria Petronella... is that age 4?? or 21?? The transcribers say she is 21...

My instinct is that these people are not connected. What I usually do is examine known names and projected dates of birth and none of these folks fit in what I have authenticated.

Here's what I've got so far: Giovanni and Celeste Apramolla Pierri came over with three kids Florence, Levi and Lizzie in 1891 (per 1900 Norfolk, MA census.) Had at least 4 more in Norfolk,MA.

Florence, in 1900, married Leopoldo "Paul" Palladeno, whom we believe came from Serre. He came over with grandmother, mother and four siblings 30 November 1893 (many thanks to suanj!) per manifest. His younger brother came from Serre per 1926 naturalization document.

Gennaro, a strong candididate to be Celesta's father, came over in 1893, from Serre, as shown above.

Part of the reason I think he is a good candidate is his age and he is from Serre. We have no other possible location for any of these folks except "Salerno."

Then, too, "Joseph Gula" is the name shown on Celesta's 1952 death certificate as her father. While the last name (and maybe even the first) was mangled in the document, SOMEONE as late as 1952 (when Celesta was almost 90 years old) was able to give a name for him. I think that means he had to have been in U.S. at some point, i.e., that Celesta's children (and maybe grands) knew him. And Celesta's youngest known son, born in U.S. 1900 was named Joseph.

I have already called the Town Clerk in Franklin looking for Joseph Gula or Apramolla/Opremolla, death certificate, but haven't heard back. Hope I can go over there soon as tomorrow and see for myself.

It takes a while to sort all these details. You must be an incredibly patient person .... We are getting closer, I am sure.

Thanks again,

Hi, good friend mfjp!!!! Thanks for your follow-up when I couldn't get on the site today. It really looks great and I hope to figure out all the advantages soon.

Regarding our ongoing topic, I yesterday visited the Town Hall in Norfolk, Massachusetts, where I found the following birth records:

Willis (actually William John) Pierri, 17 September 1894, parents John Pierri and Celeste OPPRAMOLLA, both from Salerno ...

and

Joseph Pierri, 12 February 1900, parents exactly the same.

So that name was on record in the US right after they came over here (believed about 1891)!

Today on my work computer I put a note in the location forum for Serre. It HAS to be the village these folks came from.

No luck in either Norfolk or nearby Franklin looking for Joseph Oppramola, believed father of Celeste.

Have to just keep looking I guess.... the mysteries continue!

Thanks again for all help and concern!

Hi, all!

Have made some progress on Opramolla line have been seeking, as reported prior post.

However, experiencing difficulty calling up an Ellis arrival as follows:

Giuseppe Opramolla, arrival May 20, 1896.

When I go to that page, I see line numbers nowhere near the one I seek. Page before and page after don't help either.

Can anyone else see what I can't???

Thanks and best,

Too many of the manifests of the 1890's don't link properly... and for those records that don't link... it is very important to provide the date of arrival and the name of ship and the spelling of name... and then hopefully, the manifest could be found...

GU-iseppe Opramolla... age 21..)

There is a way of finding these manifests, tho time consuming even if you experience in looking for them... and once you do find them... you can't even link them to a site unless you download and convert them to jpeg and tons of other yada yada yada...

I will look for it, and link it here soon... and still haven't given up on Celeste (such a nice name- my dialect?... we pronounce it as Che-lest-aye)...
