Cometti from Civo

Postby HAnne » 22 Dec 2013, 19:32

Hello,

I am looking for information about my grandmother, Letizia Cometti, who left Civo when she was 9 years old with her brother Giuseppe. Her father was Pietro and I do not know the name of her mother or her maiden name. In the 60's, my Aunt Josephine (Josie) went back to Civo and sold the house, which I believe was still in the Cometti name at the time.

I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who might be able to help me find out about that house, my family's history in the town, or my grandmother and her parents, brothers, sisters, etc in Civo. Anything, no matter how small, is helpful! (I have already gone through records from Ellis Island.)

My mother had me when she was very young and my knowledge of my family heritage has been very limited beyond my mother's own experience with both my grandmothers. I've always been a loner and somewhat of a nomad. My mother moved us around frequently, and I grew up feeling without a home or roots. Since I was a child, I secretly dreamed of moving away by myself to a quiet old rural town with stone houses and vegetable gardens- far off in the mountains. When I finally found the name of my grandmother's hometown and began my research, it was as though I had found that place I'd always been picturing in my head.

Now that I understand why the mountains run through my veins, I want to understand more about my family's history. Life is beautiful, and learning is a celebration of that!

Hi in Civo births index I cannot find a Letizia Cometti birth record:
1905 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1304925116 pag 1182
1904 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1304925116 pag 1153
1906 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1304925116 pag 1207

I found the birth act in 1903 index
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1304925116
Letizia Maddalena Cometti born in Caspano hamlet of Civo, on 27 Dec 1903 #43 daughter of Giovanni Cometti 31 old (son of late Giuseppe) and of Erminia Panighetti

Here is a possible marriage entry (No 9084) for Letizia to a Peter Obit. This may help confirm Letizia’s birth details that Suanj has found. I have previously seen Letizia’s passenger record (Ellis Island) which estimated her birth year as 1905 and this marriage entry estimates the year as 1902 which is neither here or there. Finding Giuseppe’s birth record (estimated birth year 1899) would further confirm that this is your Letizia. I can't look for this right now but someone else may be able to. :)

I pretty sure Suanj has the right birth record for Letizia Maddalena Cometti born in Caspano hamlet of Civo, on 27 Dec 1903 #43 daughter of Giovanni Cometti 31 old (son of late Giuseppe) and of Erminia Panighetti

Here is Giuseppe Paolo Cometti born in Caspano hamlet of Civo Index#57,1899 Dec 16th son of Giovanni Cometti 27 old and of Erminia Panighetti daughter of Giovanni Panighetti

This would match the shipmanifest which says they were leaving Giovanni Cometti in Civo and their ages and birth years how did you get Pietro as the fathers name?

Yes, I agree, I believe it to be the correct Birth Act too.

Thank you for finding Giuseppe's Birth Record. Am a little stretched for time as usual.

Re the Shipmanifest - my understanding is that the children were going to America to visit Giovanni Cometti. I was assuming he was already established there.

I hope you have a lovely Christmas Marty. Thanks for all your help and time this year. :D

Merry Christmas to you.
Actually it says on the shipmanifest pg#1 leaving the family of Giovanni Panighetti looks like father of Erminia Panighetti in Civo line #8

How funny  We are looking at two different pages. You are looking at the Departures and I've been looking at the Arrivals.

Thank you for pointing that out - I'm still learning.

Let's call it a truce :)

To Suanj, Angela Grace and Adelfio: Thank you ten thousand times for your replies and the work you've done!!! There are no words to express how wonderful I feel right now and how grateful I am to you all. I decided to check my post for responses just now, and how beautiful it is that I found out here that today was my grandmother's birthday! Thank you!

How wonderful - this is very heart warming. I am very happy for you :D and you are most welcome for the help. I have found Giovanni's Birth Record here:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1304925116

My interpretation of what it says is as follows:

Index 9
Birth Record Giovanni Andrea Cometti (di Giuseppe meaning son of Giuseppe)
It is dated 1 February 1872 at 9 a.m. in Civo.
Giovanni was born on 30 January 1872 at 3 a.m.
His father declared the birth and his name was Giuseppe, he was aged 26, a Peasant Farmer and he was the son of deceased Giovanni.
Giovanni's mother was Maddalena R--otti(?), Giuseppe's wife.
Address: No 535 ?
The side note says that Giovanni married Erminia Panighetti on 8 February 1898.

I did go through the marriage banns hoping that I would find out more about Erminia for you but didn't see them in 1898 and the year 1897 was missing so I suspect they were posted then. I will go back and recheck the beginning of 1898 shortly just in case I missed one there. I am getting use to a new computer and we are still adjusting :)

Can someone please recheck my interpretation of this Birth Act in case I have missed anything important or misinterpreted anywhere. Thank you.

Marriage Banns Giovanni and Erminia

Postby AngelaGrace56 » 28 Dec 2013, 03:19

The Marriage Banns were there after all. I somehow skipped the first page.

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... 1037631346

Just a quick interpretation of the Act:

Record No 1 Dated 1 January 1898

Giovanni Andrea Cometti, Aged 25, Single
Parents: Giuseppe and deceased Maddalena Rotti

Erminia Maria Panighetti, Single, Aged 19 (1879)
Parents: Giovanni Panighetti, Aged 44 and Giuseppa Pedrola

I think they were all Peasant Farmers. I don't have my Occupations List with me. Hopefully someone will correct this if it is incorrect.

Giovanni and Erminia Cometti's Travel and Immigration

Postby AngelaGrace56 » 28 Dec 2013, 20:05

It looks like Giovanni left Italy when Letizia was about four months old. He was visiting his brother Giuseppe.

Giovanni’s Passenger Arrival 3 April 1904: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JF1W-B2K

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0020

His wife followed nine years later? It took me a little while to find this because of the way it was indexed.

Erminia Panighetti Cometti immigrated 30 June 1913:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JN1L-L49

Erminia’s passenger arrival:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0010

I haven’t looked to see whether Giovanni and Erminia had any other children in the years between Giuseppe and Letizia. I can’t do this today and am thinking that Adelfio and Suanj may have already done this. It does however look like Giovanni and Erminia went on to have three more children in the US: Raffaela, Josephine and Mary. Not sure if you have seen the following:

I am guessing the 5 year old Josephine on this Census Record is your Aunt Josie mentioned in your original post.

It is interesting that Giuseppe and Letizia arrived in New York two months before World War One was declared.

I wonder what happened to Giuseppe?
