Giuseppe "D Ignoto" Nicandro

Postby dominique426 » 12 Jan 2014, 02:47

Hi, everyone! :D

I am trying to help my friend Kathy with her genealogy. She has been trying, without success, to find information on her grandfather Giuseppe without making any great feats.

He is born May 6 1890, Motta Santa Lucia.

Her grandfather Giuseppe Nicandro came over in 1909.

MANIFEST

He said on manifest that he was going to brother Antonio Bevacqua in Youngstown/Johnstown, PA. He also stated that his nearest relation was Michelina (I believe). I have numerous documentation on Antonio Bevacqua (I believe he died abroad in Italy) including his passport where he states his father is Felice Serianni Bevacqua.

While going through documents for Kathy, I found his Sons of Italy paperwork which states his name is Giuseppe D Ignoto Nicandro.

My friend Kathy said that she was told her grandfather's parents were not married. On her grandparents' marriage certificate, Giuseppe's parents were written as SAM NICANDRO (residing in Punxsutawney, PA) and mother GRACETTA TURCA. None of these names are valid Italian names, so I know these are incorrect. Kathy's mother was told that her father's mother died in the "Great Ash" (I have never heard of this) in Italy.

Her grandfather's obituary also stated he had stepbrothers and 1 brother in Texas.

He was married twice.

I do not have a 1910 or 1940 census for him either. All I was able to find, as was Kathy, was the 1920 and 1930 census.

My interpretation of the "Son of Italy" document is that Giuseppe Nicandro was son of unknown parents. I read the Nome e Cognome entry as Giuseppe Nicandro (figlio) di Ignoti. He was aged 39yo, in 1930?, married to Maria aged 29 who died 11 Mar 1936

I don't know how much this will help but my Grandmother's maiden name is Nicandro and she is from Johntsown, PA.

I don't have much information to give. Most of the information on my grandmother's family was never shared with me. She was born Grace Nicandro and has brothers named Joseph and Robert. I do remember hearing the name Bevacqua but I believe the first name was Pasquale. I also believe they lived in Punxatawny for awhile before coming to Johnstown. I did find this information online. http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.w ... 01/mb.ashx

I know very little about my grandmother's family, but a few things I do know leave me to believe I can be of some help.

My grandmother's maiden name is Nicandro. She was born in Johnstown, PA. In several stories she has told I remember hearing the name Bevacqua and in particular Pasquale. I believe here parents may have come from Punxatawney as well. I also think her mother was the second of two wives for her father.

I did find some more information that may help.

My great-grandfather was Guiseppe Nicandro, although I believe people knew him as Frank. He came to America from Calabria, Italy with his mother. His step-father was Pasquale Bevacqua from Punxatawney.

My grandmother's maiden name is Grace Nicandro. I believe she was a child from Guiseppe's second marriage. She was born in 1937 in Johnstown, PA. She married Herman Lux in 1956.
