Help needed with correct spelling of Surname Tazzar

Postby robtazzzar » 26 Jan 2014, 01:06

Can anybody please help with the correct spelling of the Surname Tazzar. My GGG Grandfather came over to Britain around about 1860 from Italy with his brother Dominick. The only record we have is his marriage certificate with the name Bandat Tuzzarre, but his childrens names vary in spellings Tazare, Tazzare,Tuzzare to eventually Tazzar which ended up as the family name. His Christian name varies also from Bernard, Bandat to eventually Bennett. We were told that he was most probably illiterate which would explain all the different spellings of the name. The name has been a complete mystery to all of the family and has always stopped us from finding our Italian Ancestors, any help with the correct spelling of the name would be most appreciated as we may have more of a chance finding our Italian Ancestors,

Thank you for your help, it is a struggle to find any information as all the spellings of names we have seem to be wrong. Would you possibly know the best way to find records in Italy from the early to mid 1800's.

If my idea is right abt Genova area (or La Spezia also, both the provinces are in Liguria region), the surname could be:
Lazzaro, Lazzeri, Lazzari, Lazzara...
sure the initial "T" of Tazzar surname is wrong...
just my opinion...
for bad luck the civil records in Geonva or La Spezia provinces starting from 1866, so it is impossibl to search a birth record of 1839 abt....

That should be very helpful information for the family, Suanj. I can see how in old script the letter "L" could be mistaken for a "T". To think that a mistake like that can follow a family around for more than a century is really amazing.

maybe this John Bacigalupo born in Ne town ( Genoa province, Liguria region, IT) because I found that the Bacigalupo and Cassinelli was street musicians in Manchester, Lancashire, England, around 1850s and 1860s... http://www.musicameccanica.it/antologia ... ulanti.htm
however I believe Genova area right birthplace of your Bennett...

Thank you for your help, you could well be right that John Bacigalupo may have been a relative of Bennett. I have been told by family that Bennett's Brother but maybe possibly his Brother in law moved to Bradford Lancashire which is near Manchester, and on the 1881 Scotland Census John's address is on an adjoining street to where Bennett lived in 1881. Bennett's occupation on his marriage certificate is musician the same as John. Thank you for this extra information, this could well be a big help to my search.
Kindest Regards

Rob

Hi,
Thank you, I have been trying all different ways of spelling the name in my search but to no avail. I have been in contact with another branch of the Tazzar Family in the last two weeks, and the Gentleman who has been helping me with lots of information about Bennett/Bandat's life in Scotland his mother done extensive research on the Family. The information I have found out is Bennett came over as a musician then later he sold ice cream from a tricycle (a Hokey Pokey man as they were called) and he also owned lodging houses in Glasgow, I was told his mother always said Bennett was originally from Sicily and that she was adamant that was where he was from. The strange thing is our Family has never had any contact with this Gentleman's Family, when i mentioned the Sicily location to my Mother she said she remembers either my Father or Grandfather mentioning that Bennett was from Sicily (nobody ever mentioned this to me until yesterday). Regarding the Bacigalupo Family, the John Bacigolopo you found living in Scotland is the same John Bacigalupo from 42 Edge Street in Manchester (the same John Bacigalupo in the link about musicians you sent me). John was only in Glasgow for a short time then returned to Manchester. Anyway I am starting to get somewhere at last about Bennett's life but no closer to where he came from, but the Sicily info could be a big help.
Regards
Rob

Hi Suanj,
Could the double Z in the name more likely be a double S instead, possibly Tassari. I seem to come across the spelling with a double S more than I do than with a double Z, or would the pronunciation be different.
Regards
Rob
