Struggling to decipher the place of my ancestor's birth

Postby Josie07M11 » 12 Mar 2014, 19:23

Hi everybody,

This morning I was able to view a microfilm, and was lucky enough to find my ancestor's record. I am struggling to figure out what the words after "domiciliato" say for the place where the father, Mariano Mangani, was from. I can make out 'nuova' and before that maybe serada? But this makes no sense to me. There doesn't seem to be a town in the Ragusa/Siracusa area with this name either.

Any help would be amazing! Thank you.

The more I research it, the more I believe it is "Ragusa Nuova". Would this be a possibility? It is nearby Chiaramonte Gulfi so the move could have been possible.

What you see on the record is a LOCAL address in the town "Strada Nuova #16" :-)

He was residing in Chiaramonte... (edited to correct) :D

Not sure about that, someone else might verify but I am wondering whether it is possibly meant to read living in “Strada Nuova”. It does look like Sorada to me but if you look at the word Chiaramonte they've omitted to add the “t” there also. I've googled this street but it doesn't seem to be there now but it does appear in other places in Italy miles away. The church the baptism took place was San Maria La Nuova which looks to be in Chiaramonte Gulfi. I'm pretty sure you will find that he was living in Chiaramonte Gulfi. I guess as you continue looking through the records and locate more that are relevant to this particular ancestor it will become clearer. (Very exciting finding ancestors!) Hope this helps.

Yes, it was in Chiaramonte... it was a lapse of concentration that I corrected above. :D

BUT... I believe it is a place in the town where the child was born and the parents lived - Strada Nuova #16

Sorry T. I've only just noticed that you have posted before me. I think that we must have both been posting at the same time but you are much quicker than me at putting type to post. It is good that we are in agreement anyways. :D
