As with most of here, we've been working on our genealogy but have hit a point of confusion. Records of our ancestor's last name don't all match up. Gioachino DiBella married Giuseppa Tomasello (or Montebuore) and they had 4 children in Sicily. I thought the name was maybe messed up on the marriage certificate but I think there’s something more going on here.
The following documents provide the most reliable information as far as we know. Gioachino's petition for citizenship
Now on their ship manifest records the name is Tomasello (starting line 25)
Now are these even the same people? From what I can tell, yes, the dates and places match up. Now why would Guiseppa switch between last names of Tomasello and Montebuore? What was her real name? Her birth certificate would help but we haven’t been able to locate it. Also, from the marriage certificate, did she not know her father?
This is a real stumper for us. We’ve never heard of something like this. May be we are mistaken and there is another option. That’s what we’d like to explore.
Giachino Di Bella 24 old farmer, born and resident in Reitano ( son of late Agostino and living Sebastiana Lombardo) married in Reitano on 5 Aug 1893 at Giuseppa Montebuore ( or Montelcuore) 21 old, farmer, born in Mistretta resident in Reitano ( daughter of unknown father and of Maria Maddalena Montebuore resident in Reitano also) https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... ,363111501 suanj
abt the Giuseppa maiden name discrepancy, maybe she was officially recognized by father, after the marriage at Giachino di Bella.. if you know her birth date it is possible to search in Mistretta births.. maybe it could be some note on the bottom... suanj
Hmm. We never considered that possibility of official recognition by her father. According to Giachino's citizenship papers, Giuseppa was born around 11/3/1874 or 1875 in Reitano but we haven't been able to find her birth record as of yet...
Nevertheless, thank you for the new perspective on the name discrepancy.
Wow. Great sluthing, suanj! Thank you for finding her birth certificate. We never thought to make sure the dates on the marriage certificate match.
Hmm. That seems to bring up more questions about the name discrepancy; she switched between Monteluore and Tomasello through the years: Marriage certificate (1893): Monteluore 1st child's birth (Guiseppe, 1903): Tomasello 2nd child's birth (Sebastiano, 1908): Monteluore Ship manifest (1911): Tomasello (all documents show in first post)
Why would she switch between names? Maybe situational? The marriage and 2nd child certificates were in Reitano while the 1st child certificate was from Santo Stefano di Camastra. I wonder if that had something to do with it.
Still troubling about the name variation but we really appreciate finding the marriage certificate.
maybe searching in Mistretta births -second part- from 1893 to 1903 it could be possible to find the her recognition by Tomasello father... also it could be possible that her mother married and the husband recognized Giuseppa... because she travelled under Tomasello maiden name, sure she was recognized officially.. maybe searching also in Reitano marriages ( Maria Maddalena was resident in Reitano also) it could be possible if was married ... and if so to find some further info... suanj
While I was searching for records that would help explain the two surnames for Giuseppa... I came across the birth records of the first 2 Di Bella children. The dates in the naturalization document were off just a bit...
Giuseppe Di Bella Record #42 - in SANTO STEFANO Born 18 March 1903 Father: Gioacchino Di Bella Mother: Giuseppa Tomasello, his legitimate wife NOTE: The two witnesses to the record are Giovanni Tomasello, 40; and Sebastiano Tomasello, 21. Something to ponder! https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... ,363235201
Wow. Thank you so much, Tessa and suanj. And thank you Tessa for finding Carmela's birth record. We had been searching quite a long time for it! This is really starting to feel like a big family mystery. Unbelievable! Well, that really is something to think about, Tessa. I guess what next is to find Giuseppa TOMASELLO's birth and marriage record.
So it's really starting to seem as if there were two wives in two separate towns. Montelcuore, 1893 Marriage, Reitano Montelcuore, 1897 Carmela born, Reitano Tomasello, 1903 Giuseppe born, Santo Stefano di Camastra Tomaselli(o), 1906 Agostino born, Santo Stefano di Camastra - we wrote to SS. di C. for his birth record Montelcuore, 1908 Sebastiano born, Reitano
