I have received tremendous support and response from this website. But the birth of my elusive Maria Chiavone, my husband's grandmother still remains a mystery. Her birth dates on US records are 25 July 1894, 6 September 1894 and 18 August 1895. Her parents were Liborio Chiavone (1864) Mistretta, Messina and Maria Santa Salerno (1870) Gangi, Palermo. I have birth info on her parents and their other 5 children (Gaetana, Liboria, Vincenzo, Michele and Antonio). Her father came to US in 1907. Maria and her sister Gaetana came to US thru Ellis Island 14 April 1909. Liborio must have returned to Sicily after both daughters were married (1910-1911). Then her parents and siblings went to Rosario, Argentina in 1913. I don't know if Maria was born in another province, name misspelled (have seen Schiavone) or used her mother's name? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Yes. All the info I have is from FamilySearch and I have posted on IG previously with replies from Tessa, Adelfio and Erudita.
Liborio Chiavone was a "child of the wheel" born in Mistretta 12 March 1864. Liborio moved to Gangi 8 February 1888. Maria Santa Salerno born in Gangi 5 January 1870 daughter of Vincenzo Salerno & Gaetana Picone.
Liborio and Maria married in Gangi 2 October 1890.
Their children all born in Gangi: Gaetana 20 December 1891 Maria ? Liboria 2 June 1897 (I have her marriage info from Rosario, Argentina 7-5-1914) Michele 23 September 1899 Vincenzo 24 July 1902 Antonino 11 December 1904 and died 23 December 1904 Antonino 15 March 1906
Since I couldn't find her birth info, it was suggested that Maria may have been raised/adopted by Liborio and Maria Santa. I know Gaetana and Maria came to US thru Ellis island (I have the ship manifest) and the remainder of their family went to Rosario, Argentina in October 1913. Maria never saw her family again, with the exception of her brother Antonino, who visited her in Philadelphia in the 1970's.
Grateful for your response and hopefully you may be able to help.
Since you said all children were born in Gangi, try contacting the comune of Gangi for them to search and locate her birth record.
Regarding possible misspelling of the last name “Chiavone” if all other Italian records from siblings and parents that you viewed show “Chiavone”, it is very doubtful the surname spelling is incorrect on the Italian documents. I can see a misspelling on US documents like ship manifest, but very doubtful on the actual Italian documents.
Would you have an E-Mail or mailing office for Gangi, Palermo where I can request this info? Or suggestion for a church where the marriage and baptisms took place. I have some addresses for the Chiavone family: #190 Via Piedgrotta, Via San Guliano, #2 Via Neso, Via Stasso and #5 Via Mallesi. These were taken from the birth announcements. Again, any help appreciated.
Helen I did a through search for Maria Chiavone in Gangi 1888-1895 using the name Maria Chiavone and backwards Chiavone Maria nothing came up I think she was a relative taken in by Liborio and Maria Santa for what reason death of parents possible Maybe you check for a Maria Salerno or a Maria Picone born in that time frame
Marty, thanks so much. I did try looking for Picone, Salerno. No luck. What I did try was looking for a death using those names, in those timeframes. Possibly a woman who died at childbirth. There was a possible one - Domenica Salerno died 28 August 1894. It's in the Gangi death index #263. I can't translate it entirely, but if I read her age correctly she would be at least 50? Thanks for all your effort and info.
