Pre 1800 records

Postby ginagirl916 » 11 Jun 2014, 01:14

what are some good resources for finding birth/death/marriage records pre 1800. I cant seem to find what I need on Ancestry or Family search? could it just not be out there as indexed?

Any advise on searching for what I need if I don't have dates?

If you're talking Italian records, then you will need church records for pre 1800 (actually about pre 1809 on the mainland of Italy and pre 1820 in Sicily. The problem with church records though is that most were housed in local churches, some of which have since been destroyed by natural disasters such as earthquakes. Copies of such records, for the most part, were not kept at the diocesan level until 1917. There may be some parishes who chose to send copies to their diocese before this year, but I wouldn't count on finding many which did.
