Joseph Gaglio and Josephine Cimino

Postby gagliociminoroots » 19 Jun 2014, 17:50

My great grandparents came to the United States in the early 1900s and established in Chicago, Illinois. They met here and married in 1917. I have attached their marriage license (what I have of it) and I have my grandmother's birth certificate. On her brother's certificate, it shows Joseph Gaglio was born in Montelepre, Palermo, Sicily around 1882 and Josephine Cimino was born in Lascari, Palermo, Sicily around 1889. I have not been able to get any information on either of their parents and this is my hiccup in the research.

I am in the process of purchasing the death certificate for Joseph and the birth certificate for their son, James. I am sure these will be beneficial to me. I have also not been either of their gravesites and there is no record of Josephine's death in Illinois, but she may have died in East Chicago, Indiana as that was mentioned in one of the census records.

So I am wondering where should I go from here?

Montelepre births (and marriages and deaths) between 1867 and 1902 are online here: https://familysearch.org/search/image/i ... %3D2051639

Lascari births (and marriages and deaths) between 1862 and 1910 are online here: https://familysearch.org/search/image/i ... %3D1947613

To find out their parents names look for their death certs and their marriage license application (if available). Also search census records, passenger manifests, and naturalization docs. If you have a subscription to Ancestry you can do this easily. Even if you don't you can still usually find these records for free. For example, ellisisland.org has passenger manifests. Depending on where they were living, you may be able to search online databases of naturalization records.

They had children Mary, James, and Josephine and lived in East Chicago around 1940, right? Joseph immigrated around 1907. Josephine around 1910.

There'salso this passenger record:

Name: Giuseppe Gaglio
Arrival Date: 5 Oct 1906
Port of Arrival: New Orleans, Louisiana
Birth Date: abt 1882
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Palermo, Italy
Ship Name: Lazio
Last Residence: Mantelepre
Race: Italian South (Italian)

Unfortunately there's a piece of black tape which blocks the name of his brother. that row might be crossed out anyway, indicating that he canceled the trip. he was heading to NY.

Some bad news: It seems that that date of birth for Giuseppa Cimino may be incorrect. There was no one born with her name on or around 15 feb 1889 in Lascari. There's no indexes for those birth records either. However, the number of births per year was small - around 80 - so going through them one-by-one should be doable. Look at other years, too, 1888 in particular.

Here she is:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... ,246010301

Born on 20 Mar 1890 (at 9:15 pm) to Onofrio Cimino (age 40, farmer, lives in Lascari) and Salvatora Venzino (his wife, who lives with him, 38 years old, daughter of Pasquale and the deceased Maria Giuseppa Civello).

As I look at the name of her mother again, it looks like it could be Renzino. I'll have to check which name is found in Lascari.

Edit to add:
I just checked. It is Renzino.

Oh my gosh, you have helped me a lot! The ancestry you found was mine. I think you may have hit it on the head with the info you provided. I found Domenico by accident. I found Joseph's naturalization papers and Domenico was one of the witnesses of his application. I had deducted that Domenico must indeed be her brother. He also lived in Chicago and other records shows the same street address as the naturalization papers showed.

I will definitely be looking into more of the information you gave me, but I really appreciate your help!

It looks like that manifest you showed me helped more than you or I imagined. I have found another sister of Giuseppa and Domenico. She was on right above Giuseppa, name is listed as Giovanna. Above that one was another name, Salvatora Renzino and she is listed as being widowed. That means that once Onoforio died, the family packed up and headed to America.

After some digging, I found the ship manifest for Giuseppe Gaglio (it was misspelled as Guiseppe Giglio). Can anyone read line 25 and tell me who he was going to see? It looks like a G. Battitta or Battista but I can't tell anything else or if there was a relation.
