Finding a Family Name

Postby eubls » 03 Aug 2014, 15:10

I have an ancestor that was born 24 Aug 1862 in Corleta Monforte, Campania, Italy. Her name is Marie, I know this from a passport.

She is listed in a USA 1905 State Census with her mother, Maria.

I am trying to figure out her last name. The last name is most likely spelled the way the census taker "heard" it. It is spelled as Rosefelle, does anyone have an suggestions to:
1. Find if that is her last name or what the correct last name is.
2. Is there access to birth records by date, so we can easily find what her fathers first name is, as well as her mothers maiden name.

Thank you,
Brandy

IS this the NYS 1905 Census you referenced above?

Maria's mother, Maria Rosefelle, age 84, living with her?

New York, State Census, 1905 about Maria Mottola
Name: Maria Mottola
[Maria Rosefelle]

Birth Place: Italy
Age: 42
Gender: Female
Race: White
Residence Year: 1905

EDIT TO ADD:
This is a real stretch.... but there is a double surname in Campania Region (specifically Ischia) that may sound like the spelling above if pronounced with an accent... It is Rosario Falette

I am not sure how I can post the image, because it is not from a URL...I have a copy of it from a family member.

Do you have a digital image?

If not, try taking a photo and uploading that here with an image-sharing site like http://www.postimage.org

BTW - I added an edit above :-)

This looks like the family in the 1930 US Census
Maria Mottola is a widow
Son Louis [Luigi] residing there
ALSO - daughter Antonietta Capalbo who is also a widow, and her children.

This census gives the year of immigration as 1890.
Early manifests hold little information... but I have been searching for a manifest for any of the family members (husband of Maria Mottola, children: Luigi, Francesco and Antonietta) who were all born in Italy.

It appears that Gaetano died sometime between 1925 and 1930...

He appears in the 1925 NYS Census, age 65
Also on the census (at E. 113th St.) is wife, Maria, and son, Louis (Luigi)
Luigi indicates citizenship with a naturalization date of 1911. Maybe a search for his naturalization papers will produce a ship name and date.

Also... it would seem that daughter, Antonietta, was married in US. Spouse Giuseppe Capalbo.
Maybe mother's maiden name shows up on her marriage record...

1925 Census

EDIT TO ADD:

Marriage Index listing of Marriage of Giuseppe Capalbo and Antonietta Mottola in 1902 in NY

Capalbo Giuseppe Aug 14 1902 #15481 Manhattan
Mottola Antoinette Aug 14 1902 #15481 Manhattan

You can order this record online... using the cert #
http://www.nyc.gov/dorforms/marriagecert.jsp

Here is the family (in case you do not have this) on the 1910 US Census. Name written as MOTELLO

Located this Naturalization record for Antonietta Capalbo...widow of Giuseppe (Joe) Capalbo
Childrens' names match those in the censuses. And the marriage date agrees with the one found in the NYC Index.
While it does not provide her mother's maiden name, it does provide a lead :-)

Antonietta Mottola Capalbo arrived under the name Barbara Antonia Mottola - and obviously liked the name Antonietta and used that in USA.
She arrived on 21 July 1890 to NY on the vessel Austria.

The record has her place of birth as Corleto Monforte, on 17 January 1887.

Now when you write to Corleto Monforte, you will have a specific birth record to search for. This will give you mother's maiden name. Or maybe we'll get lucky and the name will be clear on the ship manifest (assuming we can locate it! :-) )

EDIT TO ADD:

Here is an interesting find....
Marriage of Antonette Mottola lists her mother's maiden name as De Vita

So Maria De Vita Mottola's mother, Maria Rosefelle, was possibly listed in the census by HER maiden name?

Antonetta Mottola
New York, Marriages, 1686-1980

Name: Giuseppe Capalbo
Spouse's Name: Antonetta Mottola
Event Date: 14 Aug 1902
Event Place: Manhattan, New York, New York
Father's Name: Vincenzo
Mother's Name: Gaetana Ransia
Spouse's Father's Name: Gaetano
Spouse's Mother's Name: Maria De Vita
