Searching Antonio LEONE, Polia, Calabria b1896

Postby Nsondy » 26 Aug 2014, 03:05

Hi all -

Can you tell me if records for Polia are available? One of my Italian grandfathers was from this town - Antonio Leone, b. 16 Jul 1896. His father was named Guiseppe, and he listed his birthplace as Sant'Eufemia d'Aspromonte, Italy. I would like to find a birth record for him if possible. I believe his mother's name was Antonia Bova.

Nancy :)

Marty - I have been trying to figure out the name of the town on that manifest - GALETON, PA!!! Thank you so much, I have been trying to Google different possible names, and I was getting nowhere, fast. I know this is the Giuseppe Leone I am looking for, since the manifest that Tessa posted names his aunt, Antonia Bova. This is especially interesting, as Antonia Bova was Antonio's MOTHER. I don't have Giuseppe's birthdate :( There is no one left to ask in the family, so unless I can find it on one of Antonio's documents...I'm not sure how I'll get it. I did write to the address that Peter gave me, so hopefully I will get something from them that helps me pinpoint the rest of the family line. Thank you all SO MUCH for your assistance...

Deciphering "Galeton, PA" was brilliant, Marty :)

Hi Marty!

Located the manifest you referenced above for Giuseppe Leone :-)
I had to go the the Genoa pages and scroll backward to page 585...

He leaves "wife Antonia Bova in Polia"
Going to "brother Antonio Leone in Galeton, PA"

Here is the link
Line 7 (be sure you are on page 585 - you may need to scroll through the pages)

Well, this is an incredible amount of information to get in one day! Thank you again and again....Marty, I found the records you and Tess have pointed me to, and then I did some more searching and found more. Can you take a look at this one for me? Vincenzo Leone comes over on 04 May 1907 aboard the Hamburg - and he is meeting a friend in Galeton, PA - but I can't make out the friend's last name. First name looks like Raffaele - and I thought last name might be Rizzi, but I'm not sure. Can you see if you can see the manifest and tell me what you think?

My obsession grows with each treasure I find...

Nancy :)

Thank you, Peter, I DID miss your post! I don't know how you folks can read the writing on some of these hand-scribbled documents - I am going to check out the friend, Raffaele Ruffio this evening. Thank you again for helping me fill in a branch of my family!

LOL I use a magnifying glass in addition to my squinting abilities, and I still can't read most of these!! I have a manifest I could use some help reading if you're up for the squinting -

SS Konig Albert, arriving NY 01 Aug 1907. Line 28, Antonio Leone - I can't read what is in column 11 - name and address of person back in Italy. On the second page, I cannot read column 18, where they are going in the US. I found the manifest on the Ellis Island site.
