Looking for Puma - Pagliarello Marriage or Connection

Postby rp76226 » 27 Aug 2014, 16:38

Both Puma and Pagliarello are legitimate last names and not used as first or middle names. Many Puma records, both family and non-family contain both Pagliarello Puma names. I first found it for 3 of the 6 children of Salvatore Puma and Maria Rosa Carlino who married on April 28, 1911 in Racalmuto, Agrigento, Sicily. Here are the links (2) to their church marriage record:

The 3 children given Pagliarello-Puma names were:
Vincenza born about 1816/died June 1, 1898, record # 109.
Gaetano born about 1820/ died August 26, 1893, record # 474.
Calogero born about 1826/died October 25, 1906, record # 319.
All lived, married, and died in Racalmuto.
Has anyone found a Puma - Pagliarello marriage or connection?

I haven't seen that combination, but I wanted to ask you a different Puma-related question: Do you see in Recalmuto the name written Poma instead of Puma in the earliest records? If so, do you think it was originally Poma or does there not seem to be any consistent pattern?

Have you tried looking at telephone directories in places Italians historically immigrated to such as Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, the USA, Canada, Swtizerland, Germany ??? Please let me know what you have done so far? Peter

Carubia, I have not seen Poma. Could be a handwriting issue or could be a real name. This link yields common racalmuto names - http://www.avitrees.com/town_info.jsp?t ... =Agrigento
American records are sometimes mispelled Pumo. I have seen Pomo on american records, but not sure if legitimate.

Peter, I don't see how telephone directories would show two names like Puma and Pagliarello linked. So no, I haven't gone that route. I've translated over 800 Puma civil records from Racalmuto. Here are the links -

The thought occurred to me that PUMA is the male name who would more likely be listedsince the children would be PUMA and since first names in Italy usually remain in families for generations that perhaps, instinctively, you might come across one of the great grandchildren bearing the family first names that might warrant a potential relative letter as a last resort if you cannot find something more helpful than what I suggested. The ellisisland.org website has 9 PUMA surnamed immigrants arriving at NYC from Racalmulto. Perhaps reviewing their ship manifest you might find a reference to Pagliarello. Peter

I did a quick check and found 10 PUMA-PAGLIARELLO connections which appear in the family website of CONIGLIO and ALESSI SERRADIFALCO. They have an e-mail address Coniglio Family@aol.com which does not appear to be operating but give it a try. In the meantime the contact person you need to find in the USA is ANGELO F.CONIGLIO (address unknown) who may have more information.

The website you go to is ERROR http://www.worldconnect.rootsweb.ancest ... in/igm.cgi ERROR

Please let me know how far you get. Peter

Forget the website above that I gave you....follow this..... http://rootsweb.ancestry.com when page opens up type in Puma on the left side in SEARCH ROOTSWEB and when the next page comes up click on the first" WORLD CONNECT .......406" and the next page should come up with the Puma-Pagliarello's that I mentioned to you. Select CONIGLIO way to the right after any one of them for the Coniglio familygenealogy of which they are a part. Peter

Peter, I have been in contact with Ange Coniglio several times. He wrote a fictional book about Racalmuto and has a friend who is descended from one of my great, great, great grandparents. I reached out to establish contact with his friend, but did not get a response. Ange does not have the Puma-Pagliarello connection information.

American records are sometimes mispelled Pumo. I have seen Pomo on american records, but not sure if legitimate.

I'm talking about Italian records, and early 19th c. ones in particular. I've seen it enough times, written very distinctly, to know that it is not a handwriting issue. Moreover, the same person will be referred to as Puma on one record and Poma on another, so it is just a variant spelling, but in the earliest records Poma is more common. However, I've only seen this in Ribera, so it may be a spelling unique to that town. I assume that you've viewed the microfilm going back to the early 1820s at Recalmuto, so if it were spelled that way in that comune you would know. As spelling became more standardized in the late 19th c. this variant disappeared.

I'd post an example, but unfortunately all the scanned images of pre-1862 files that I have are too large to be uploaded here.

I have not reviewed those early film records. I've gotten early birth records from later marriage or death civil records usually on line, or sometimes from the Mormon site.

Peter, if you are willing to send me all the pre-1862 Puma images that you have, this link should be able to handle the volume (up to 200 at a time) - http://pumafamily.smugmug.com/upload/nrBH2p/pumashare

Sorry but I do not have any pre 1862 Puma images. I did see a listing here in this Puma- Pagliarello inquiry that was quite long 20 or so and they all of a sudden disappeared when I went back to that listing. It was impressive and told you so. The only listing that I know about are the 10 or so listed in the Rootsweb.Ancestry.com site that I previously mention above. Peter
