help obtaining birth record

Postby lathompson » 12 Oct 2014, 23:02

Two of my GGgrandparents are from the same town. I have his baptism record and their marriage info from the comune. I have tried to write for information on my GGgrandmother but have had no reply. Is there anyone that is available to help out with situations like this? I have her DOB and the date of their marriage. I'm trying to get more info on he side of the family. They are from Pescantina which is quite close to Verona. Thanks.

Linda

Technically it is the job of the people in the Stato Civile office to provide those records, but it all depends on what you asked for. If it was in English, not specific enough, or a type of document that normally requires payment then they might ignore it.

If your letter/email was in Italian, was specific, and was a date that they actually have records for (theoretically they will only respond wit post Unification - 1870ish depending on the comune - although most comunes SHOULD have records back to 1809) then write the Mayor, in Italian, and ask him to put pressure on the people at the office since it is their job to respond and provide documents.

I had to do this once for my great-grandmothers hometown in Lazio and within days of emailing the Mayor I received a reply from the Stato Civile/Anagrafe office.
TIP: When asking for records from Italy, do NOT ask for an "estratto." ALWAYS ask for a "copia integrale." A photocopy of the original Act will contain more information

What years are you searching for?
Did you send a photo id with your request?

I did not send a photo ID since I had requested the info on my GGF prior and had received something. It was in italian. I can try again. It is from 1869. They were married in the same town and I have that record already. Thanks so much. I am always going back and forth between all 6 of my italian great grandparents looking for more info.

You are probably wasting your time requesting a birth record for 1869 from the Comune. The LDS have records on microfilm from 1806-1815. After Napoleon was defeated the South continued to keep civil records but the North did not, and the church continued doing this until 1871 when all of Italy was required to begin (or continue) civil records.
You will need to write to the Parish church for a baptism record.
