City of Origin and a Passenger Manifest

Postby john_dominic » 30 Jun 2005, 08:40

Ok, suprising to me, I just found out that it seems that one of my ancestors was not from the city my family said.

There are no records to be found.

And, it does make sense since that ancestor was shady and traded in the wife (with two kids) for a new one and left her on her own, so of course things might not be right.

But, I do have a ship manifest, which SEEMS to be him, but i'm finding it hard to read.

So, if anyone can provide me with assistance reading this (the city is highlighted in the box), it would be of great help:

Thanks again,

Thanks Juanminibar, but the problem with those two cities are that they are in the North, and he is clearly marked as being Southern Italian, came from a ship full of Southern Italians, and even looked Southern Italian (besides being fairly tall).

Are there any other similar spelled / sounding names from the South?

My grandmother was under the impression he was 100% Sicilian.

The town Vedano was just the town of his last residence... ... and not necessarily his birth place... maybe he found work in that part of Italy... before heading out to the USA.

You don't seem to sure that he is your ancestor... do you recognise the cousin's name mentioned in section 16?

Also take a look the passenger listed below him, Giovanni Bonanno... is the person he is visiting the same person as mentioned in Carmello's info in box 16?? Giovanni Bonanno is from Pedara ... you never know....

City of Pedara: Sicily Region (Sicilia)

Can anyone make out the name?? Giuseppe Di Ris??

You are pretty good with the Ellis Island Searches.

That was quick.

Anyway, the name doesn't ring a bell since the guy wasn't exactly too nice to my side of the family (as I said) leaving them in the dust. Additionally, they moved away from Boston, fairly early on, so communication was lost.

However, his first wife came from Pedara or Trecastagni (they are neighboring cities, records conflict), so that does mean it's worth investigating.

Yep Yep Yep. The image I am using is from that same manifest, right off the site. You might be confused since the record is pointing to the next entry for the next person as the city of origin (look closely).

I didn't want to put the whole damn page in here, since it would be pretty hard to read the thread.

And, the reason i'm not 100% sure it's him is that Laudani is semi-common, and wrecklessly misspelled at Ellis.

It's LIKELY him, given:

- The window of time he arrived
- His age at arrival
- The fact that he's Sicilian
- That he was going to Boston
- His future wife may have been from Pedara
- Tons of Laudanis live in Pedara today.

I think I will investigate that city first.

However, if anyone else has an idea if any city like "Vedano" exists in the South (just in case) that would help (until I get records, otherwise).

I just edited it.

If you look closely, we're looking at the exact same record, except that the transcribers of the documents to text messed up the city of origin.

He's still listed as Vedano in the script.

The key thing to note is his neighbor on the boat seems to have the same cousin (or was BSing that, who knows?) in Boston, so they could have both came from Pedara.

Oh, the other two are impossible, since he had my Great-Grandmother, Veronica Laudani born in Lawrence, MA (right outside of Boston) in 1907.

It is indicated in her Death Certificate, and they are all in the 1910 Federal Census as living in Lawrence, MA.

That's what I was meaning when I said about the window of time he arrived.

BTW, for everone - please keep city names coming. I am going to try Pedara first, but if that does not work, i'm making a list.

sooooo... is it to late to ask what his year of birth was??? I should have asked this earlier on..

further.. names of wrongful transcriptions... :?

Sandanio,Carmelo Pedara, Catania 1908  38 .... though time frame may be off...

both Landini, Landani... and Laudani surnames can be found using "Pedara" as the town of interest... also Sandini, etc....

Doesn't this drive you crazy???

Will check further Thursday evening... no work Friday :P :P as it is Canada Day up here...

Take care,
