Grandfather from Frisa

Postby jaspbri0317 » 17 Nov 2014, 20:20

I have been able to find some information on my great-grandfather but I was hoping someone could help me find even more about his time in Italy and his parents.

Nicola Civitarese
Frisa, Italy

Came to America on January 3rd, 1920.
Ship name: Duca Delgi Abruzzi
Port of Departure: Napoli

We think he was born in 1914.

Anything information at all would be so helpful!

Welcome to IG website are you sure he is from Frisa ? What were his brothers and sisters names?
Could he possible be from Poggiofiorito once called Villarielli? Did they settle in Beverly Mass?

Are you certain about the arrival date?
Could he have traveled again in 1929?

Is this your Nicola?
Located a 1929 manifest for a Nicola Civitarese, age 18 from “P.Fiorito” (this is an adjacent town, Poggiofiorito, to Frisa to the west)
He is traveling with mother, Liberata Salvani Civitarese, age 41; and siblings: Camillo, Elpidio, and Ernesto. Nicola (18) and Ernesto (15) are the oldest.
Nicola’s occupation is listed as joiner, and Ernesto is a shoemaker.
Liberata is leaving her father Landino Salvani in Poggiofiorito.
Their destination is Beverly, Massachusetts, to husband/father Leonardo

The Ellis Island passenger manifest said the last place of residence was Frisa, but that could have been wrong.

His siblings are Frank, Anthony, Susan, and Joe. But I believe he was the only one born in Italy.

He settled in Reading, Pennsylvania.

We believe he was 6 when he came to America and no one thinks that he traveled again for any reason.

Yes, I think that might be his mother! Thank you so much for this information! We were never sure who he traveled with but we thought it was probably his mother.

Then, I believe it is possible that he is the second Nicola I posted in the Quarantine Hospital.

Here is a death record for Louise Civitaresi in Reading, PA.
Possibly a little more digging will reveal her to be the same Louisa that was quarantined with Nicola in 1920?

Oh wow! Yes, that would make sense that Lousia is his mother.

OK... found them on the "Detained Passengers" list for the ship you have listed.
They were sent to the hospital...
Didn't come up with my first search because Nicola is listed as female... :?

Mother's maiden name (which she traveled under, as was the custom of Italian women) was Mattioli :D

So now we have Luisa Mattioli and son Nicola Civitarese born in Italy, possibly Frisa.
Father, Antonio Civitarese, born Italy?

You can write directly to Frisa, if you think that is their place of birth.
Address:
Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Piazza Principe di Piemonte
66030 Frisa (CH)
ITALY

EDIT TO ADD:
Using the numbers on the detained passengers list I was able to locate the manifest page for them
Luisa Mattioli, age 31, leaves father Giuseppe in FRISA, and joins husband in Minersville PA
Son Nicola Civitarese is age 6, and there is a notation that indicates that the naturalization process was begun by Nicola about 1940.

I can't thank you enough! I guess my next step is to get a letter to Frisa to see if they have birth records.

So do we think Antonio was already in America before Luisa and Nicola?

EDIT:

Where did find Antonio as being listed as the Father?

I'm starting to get confused!

I thought I had noticed it on the death card for Luisa/Louisa... but I may have seen it when I was looking at census records for them in Pennsylvania.

I will go back and search again to be sure :-)

Edit to add:
On the dead benefits card from Pennsylvania Order of Sons of Italy...
"Wife of Antonio Civitarese"

BTW - on Luisa/Louisa Civitarese's death card (the one I posted earlier) you have her Social Security #
You can request (for a fee) her Social Security Application (SS-5) which should provide you with her place of birth, names of parents and/or name of spouse.

You can request online here

Yes the 1940 census information is definitely our family!

Thanks for the tip about finding her Social Security application. I will definitely pursue that and hope to find more about her side of the family.

Thanks so much for finding this information for me!
