Jacob Simonetti 1849-1910 Harrisburg Joseph Germer

Postby Simonettisays » 06 Feb 2015, 06:28

Looking for relatives of Jacob Simonetti - a well known grocer in Harrisburg in late 1800s till his death in 1910. Jacob was born in Lucca Italy in 1849. He came to the U.S. with his father and brother Larry after their mom died in Italy (1856 or 1858). His father died shortly after arrival and the boys were orphans. They were taken in by a good Baptist woman and raised well. Jacob started a small grocery business in Harrisburg and had a son in about 1869 - Joseph with his wife Annue Fahs. He divorced Annie F in 1872 and in 1873 he married Annie Seidel and has 3 more kids - Maurice, Homer and Della. Joseph ends up with his mom and her new husband John AC Germer in 1873. They have a number of children and apparently never "officially" adopted Joseph is known as a Germer along with the other children.

I'd like to find some of Homer or Maurice's relatives - (Della never married).

Plus need to find birth , marriage and death certificate info on Joseph. To prove he really was a Simonetti. He is mentioned as Jacobs son in an obit from 1910. Interestingly enough he isn't mentioned in the 1872 divorce decree I found for Jacob and Annie Fahs. The info on Joseph just seems to disappear after 1920. He was a bridge builder for American Bridge Co. Family story is that he had a drinking problem and had been gone before. We don't know where he is buried.

Yes this is the same Jacob. Don't know why the Price middle name for Maurice. Really wish the 1870 Census was available - would show Joseph in the Simonetti household. Not sure why the Maurice and Homer misspellings. I have seen Della as Delia as well.

Just two quick questions. 1) Jacob comes to this country before Italy is a country but is he essentially an Italian at the time of the unification; 2) he naturalized at some point before 1900 per census - since this is before 1912 does that mean Joseph who is born in Usa lose his Italian citizenship?
