Vergato/Vergati Family

Postby Frusso » 05 Mar 2015, 19:46

I am helping a friend find the origin of his family named “Vergato.” The Vergato name is very rare and most “Vergato’s who emigrated to American at the turn of the 19th century came from Salerno. The name "Vergati" is also may be substituted for the name "Vergato." The Salerno communes that Generoso most likely came from were Salerno, Battipaglia, San Valentino Torio, Agropoli, Sant'Anna Salerno , Roccadaspide and Pontecagnano. Long shots are Napoli, Castellamare di Stabia or Settingiano. All indications say that he is from the Province of Salerno. The my friend's grandfather was named Generoso Vergato. He was born in 1873. He was about 12 years old when he emigrated to American around 1885 (New Haven, CT). Generoso’s first born son (in America) was named "Rocco." He probably named Rocco after his father who remained in Italy with his mother and possibly other family members. The name "Giustina" was the given name to his first born daughter (in America) who was probably named after his mother. Their is a familial connection between the Vergato family and the Muro family that I suspect they came from the same town. Generoso married Maria Muro. She emmigrated to the US about 1898 at the age of 15. Any help would be greatly appreciated. None of the sites that I have checked show any presence of Generoso Vergato traveling from Italy to America. I have lots of information on him once he arrived in the US.
Grazie. Fred Russo
