City of Cosenza orphanage adoption records

Postby ashaker » 22 Mar 2015, 05:27

I am looking for adoption records for my Grandfather Ludovico Misantropo who was born in the City of Cosenza on 28/9/1899. He was sent to the orphanage the next day by order of the birth registrar. Does anyone know the name of the orphanage in Cosenza at that time and where I can find adoption records for him? Thanks in advance.

Do a google search for Brefotrofio di Cosenza. It looks like the orphange (Brefotrofio) was actually in Cosenza. If it wasn't the birth act would most likely have named the city. IF records still exist the best you could hope for is probably the name of the person to whom he was fostered for breastfeeding. This person might have kept him for 3 years or longer but if his surname on emigration is the same as on his birth record then it is highly unlikely he was formerly adopted.

Thank you Ann for the reply. I could not find any records online for the Brefotrofio di Cosenza on my first search. I will continue searching. From the orphanage he was taken to Roto Greca by the Bosco family. He may not have been formally adopted as you suggested, because his name was listed on the ships record in 1903 as Albino Misantropo. They changed his first name but not his surname. By the 1920 USA census his surname was listed as Bosco. Thanks again for your help.

You won't find Brefotrofio records on line. It wasn't unusual for foundlings who remained with a family who emigrated to take their surname on arrival in the USA where the 'obsession' of documents was not so strictly observed. It also masked their illegitimate status which was not possible in Italy.
