new at searching online records.....

Postby josetomolo » 24 Mar 2015, 07:58

Hi all,

Is anyone able to direct me on how to search for civil records and or military records in sicily (province Siracusa ( town Ferla & Sortino) from 1901 onwards?

I have been trying to search on ancestry.com and familysearch.org but not getting very far

Do you need special membership to access the records?

thanks

Jose

You're in luck; those 2 towns have 20th-c. records online at familysearch. Look here:

Moreover, church records for Sortino are also online:

Because Vincenzo Tomolo parents are listed unknown on his marriage act the same will probally be listed on his military enlistment because his parents never recognized him before the state at birth or before he married.
In searching Italian civil records you have birth(nati) death(morte) marriage (matrimoni) by year most go from 1866-1910 some towns have other years. Indexes are found at the beginning or end of the year you are searching by index number and surname. There are also multi year indexes which combine 5 or 10 years of indexes
Babies are born then presented to the civil official of the town usually within a few days of birth for entry in the birth registry. If there is a problem foundling birth or natural disaster and they cant register the birth act until much later they are entered in the Parte 2 for that year usually in the rear of the records and that record is usually handwritten. Sometimes there are sidenotes with marriage or death information or if the act has a mistake in it a correction to those mistakes
Birth acts are signed by the civil official and 2 witnesses not usually family members

The indexes for the churches in Italy of baptism and marriage and death are arranged by first name first (later years last name first) by year and date of the act and page and record number. Just find your person in the index and go back to the records to find the act you

Thank you for the links and information

When I clicked on the first link for records in Ferla, cittadinanze only 5 pages in the book came up? There was no registry in any order just 5 pages.

Can anyone help as to what to expect when navigating these registries' and how I find information on a particular surname , what order it may be in?

Many thanks!

Hi guys,

more specifically say for example I am trying to search through Italia, Siracusa, Siracusa, Stato Civile (Tribunale), 1900-1942 for Ferla (below is the link)

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... ,361784802

there are 2000 pages, any tips on how people search for their relatives by date or surname?

Thanks !

If we are lucky, there is an index listing for each year (at the beginning or end of the acts for that year as Marty :D stated above)... and you ARE lucky! There are indexes for the birth acts in the link you provided for Ferla.

For example, using your link above - it begins with births (nati) for 1900, and at the end of the births for 1900 there is an index. The names are listed alphabetically by surname, and it includes the name of the father. The listing will give you the record # .
Here is the link for the index for births in 1900.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... ,361784802
And this link to the index for births in 1901.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... ,361784802

Just continue to look for the index after each birth year.

T.
