Birthplace - Bassa Licarda?

Postby Piano Dee » 27 Mar 2015, 19:06

I have a marriage certificate from NY in 1889 and the birthplace indicates Bassa Licarda, Italy. Any ideas where this is?

Surnames are Grieco and D'Alessio. Their mothers' surnames are Vasta and Maracella or Marangillo (I have about 7 different spelling for this name)

I am thinking this is a clerk's phonetic spelling of Basilicata :-)

ALL of the surnames you listed are found in this Province, except Marangillo which is spelled Marangiello there.
Maybe we can help you find the exact town of birth....

Can you provide some first names and approx. birth dates for us?
Possible year of arrival?

T.

Never thought of Basilicata! Makes more sense. Thought of "lower" Licata but that doesn't jive with anything my grandma told us. Thanks! :D

I have GG Grandfather Vincenzo D'Alessio (B. ~1852) that came to NY around 1885 with his wife Teresa Marangillo D'Alessio (B. ~1855) and their daughters Rosina (B. ~1872) (my G grandmother) and Maddalena (B. 1876). More children were born in US.

Other Ggrandfather named Vincenzo Grieco (B. 1864) also came to US ~1885. His father was Guiseppe Grieco and mother was Maria Arcangela Vasta Grieco.
