looking for my grandfathers birth certificate or bith place

Post by terryann55 »

My grandfather name is carmelo mollica, he arrived in new york around 1905. I think he came from sanFratello (although my father always claim he was from reggie calabria) he was spprox 25 when he arrived. he died 10 years later in new york. he death certificate say only that he was in NY for 10 years and that he was 35 it also misspells his name it Mollico. I am at a total dead end. His fathers name was Gussippe and his mother rosa greco according the the death certificate.

can anyone help me

Thanks, Terry

Hi suanj,

Your point # 1 I believe to be my grandfather, because my grandmothers name was rosa and my father was born in 1909 his name was frank. I can't find anything else. I have his death certificate he was killed in 1915.

thank you

I think you may be right Gusippe and Rosa did not come to New york.
Maybe that is why I can't find them. I tried to find when carmelo and rosa were married by I find no record.

You have some other details... checking the infos on this old topic, I can say that the Carmelo Mollica arrived in 1904 coming from San Fratello, Sicily, IT:
first trip

Last Name: MOLLICA
Ethnicity: Italy, Italian
Last Place of Residence: S FRATELLO
Date of Arrival: May 29, 1905
Age at Arrival: 27Y no 37 right

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0017
well he was born around 1869 in San Fratello.. and he was married in 1899 in San Fratello at Benedetta Santoro .. I found the marriage
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... n308942738

and again another trip in 1914, final destination Ottawa, Canada

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0014

so cannot be your Carmelo....

your Carmelo was born around 1878:
1910 United States Federal Census about Carmela Molica

Household Members: Name Age
Carmela Molica

and you said Reggio Calabria area... I cannot find the arrival... if you have more details, maybe we can search better.... he died in 1915 and so no WWI draft registration card.. that is very helpful for to descover the italian birthplace; I searched also in old newspapers and no articles abt the him death...

Dear Suanj,
You have the right Carmelo born around 1878,And the cenus is right, my father was Frank he was 1 year old at the time. Carmelo never married Ana Rose, but they lived together. He was married when he arrived per ellis island report. All except for my father frank, the other children were not named mollica. And I have never heard of Michael maybe he died. May dad was 5 when his father was shot see link, I have his death certificate but it has no birth date on it.

http://www.gangrule.com/events/struggle ... -1914-1918

I am at a dead end. I'm not sure if my father was right about where carmelo came from.
I know there is a obituray but, I can"t find the article.

Do you think he had a passport and is there anyway to find that?

I have been looking for so long!!

Thank you so much for you help!!!
Terry Mollica
