Agostino Aresca

Postby RosalindJones » 24 May 2015, 15:57

Hi - searching for details of my great great grandfather who we think came from Florence area - ran The Florence Hotel in Southampton at turn of century. We know he and his wife, Ada, had a son (also Agostino) in 1902, and then they moved to London and had a daughter, Louisa In 1904. His wife went to Canada and his daughter moved back as a child to Southampton but we can't track either him or his son - can anyone help? Bene grazie

If this is your Ada:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/T ... cc=1307718

he must have died before 1926 (but maybe you already know that).
Also, I found that Agostino probably had a double name, Baldassarre Agostino:

I'd also add that, according to Italian White Pages

www.paginebianche.it

Aresca seems to be from Piedmont, rather than from Tuscany (of course, that does not mean Agostino was NOT from Florence or surroundings)

Thank you so so much for this information - we have some more information at last!

We know his wife Ada went to a logging camp in 1906 - leaving behind her daughter (my grandmother) and later family members were told she had died! Her daughter was brought up by her grandparents in Southampton. But why her mother left is a mystery - we only found the Canadian connection a while back - but have found her grave and have photos - thanks to a local lady there. She married in 1926 - so must have found out Agostino had died - we do think she came back once, just after her own mother died - but the whole business is a family mystery.

The name Galliano is interesting as that is the name of one of his partners at the hotel in Southampton - I shall investigate that more!

I'm afraid I can't read Italian so can't follow the last two posts!

This new information is great and means we are one step closer to finding out more about our Italian heritage - thank you
Rosalind

Pippo - I've just printed and read the birth record - interesting that the details of his marriage are added - is this a standard thing in Italy?

yes is standard if as people marrying in foreign country wish that the marriage is recognized also in Italy: to need just of to send the foreign marriage certificate for transcription in the marriage register of Commune, and the marriage is ok also in Italy, if no, viceversa, a man married in foreign country, marriage no transcribed in Italy, can marry in Italy as never married, single totally... suanj

According to ten-year indexes of death, one Baldassare Agostino Aresca died in 1914:

Unfortunately, the corresponding act is not online, but you could request it to the Commune of Mombercelli.

Thank you both for the information - I shall definitely write regarding Agostino's death and see if we can perhaps get a death certificate - do you think this might be possible? Do you think he had returned to Mombercelli?

He did have a son - Agostino - born here in England in 1902. It is very odd but no-one ever knew about this first child and we cannot find a death certificate in the records here. Is it possible he returned to Italy with his father? Would there be Italian records showing this do you know? As far as we are aware there was no further contact with his daughter Louisa but she would have been 12 when he died. According to my mother (Louisa's daughter) she was very 'italiancised' as an adult so perhaps had friends in the Italian community in Liverpool where they lived - she was killed sadly when only in her thirties in the blitz of 1943.
