Searching for Mother's Side of the Family

Postby mandiepandie92 » 16 Jun 2015, 05:18

Hello,

My mother's father had passed away when she was 17 which was about '73/'74 of November. His name was Sabastian Gondalfo. He was a truck driver and was able to fix cars really well. I'm only repeating what I've been told. He didn't have hair and was a kind of heavy guy. I was told when coming to Elis Island the name was changed from Gandalfo to Gondalfo. I know that he was 1 of 7 children. He lived in South Ozone Park, Queens with Wife Sophie (Vacarro) Gondalfo and only child Margaret Gondalfo. If anyone has any further information at all, family, relatives, background, articles...etc. Please send them my way.

Kind regards :)
Amanda

My grandfather was born in USA in december. His parents were Margaret and Salvatore. Trying to make sure this is accurate. He died November 1973. Surviving him is Wife Sophie, (95) and daughter Margaret (58). This info is all very helpful. My mother lost contact with her father's family after he passed. Is there any information on the siblings or rather the children of Salvatore and Margaret Gandalfo(Gondalfo). I would like to know where they may be and if they had children. These are cousins my mother never knew where they went.

Based on the arrival manifest that suanj :-) posted,
Sebastiano would have been born in 1917/1918, and he was a US cit. - They were joining father, Salvatore, in NY.
Mother's name is Margarita - who was born in Licodia, Italy.

Suanj also found a 1930 and 1940 Census showing Sebastiano in the family of Salvatore and Margarita ...
AND the marriage record of Salvatore Gandolfo and Margarita Cutrone.

The WWI Alien Registration card for Salvatore Gandolfo shows the same address as the ship manifest and the census (Mott St., NYC)
This registration card identifies Salvatore's date of birth and place of birth (14 August 1891 and Licodia Italy)

From there I located Salvatore Gandolfo's birth record in Licodia Eubea, Italy.
This record identifies his parents, Sebastiano Gandolfo and Maria Astuto.

I also located the marriage of Sebastiano Gandolfo and Maria Astuto, giving you another generation back... for both of these parents.

I do believe this is your Sebastiano's line, and that we have the correct Sebastiano Gandolfo/Gondolfo -

So you have -
Sebastiano Gandolfo - born 1917 in New York
Son of
Salvatore Gandolfo - born 1891 in Licodia Eubea, Italy
Son of
Sebastiao Gandolfo - born about 1856 in Licodia Eubea, Italy
Son of
Salvatore Gandolfo -no birth info as yet.

Connecting Sebastiano to Sophie and Margaret would not change what he have here :-)

This is incredible. I am positive this is the same person. My mother told me he was born in december but they didn't register him until January so that would make the January 1, 1917 part accurate. Is there any further information on Salvatore and Margaret Gondalfo's children aside from Sebastian? Another quest I am on.

Also my grandmother, I know little of her side and know we are related to the Defeo Family (the ones from the Ammityville house) I want to know how I am connected. Her maiden name was Vaccarro. She had a sister Jean, brother Pete, and another Vincent. They lived in Brooklyn, New York. My grandmother was born May 11, 1920. Can you find anything on her side? She is currently alive at 95 with full blown Alzheimer and won't have the ability to remember anything.

Will have to see what I can find on your mother's side...

For now... I have located a family tree on Ancestry for Sebastiano's sister, Maria.
That is the sister listed on the manifest right below him.
It is a public tree, so you can view it if you have an Ancestry subscription (you can get a free trial for a week or so)
Maria Gandolfo is listed as born 29 September 1918 in Manhattan -
Her parents are listed as Salvatore Gandolfo and Margherita Cutrone
Maria married Salvatore Scalice - no date given
Both Maria and Salvatore or deceased... Maria in 1988 and Salvatore in 1992, both in Brooklyn,, NY
There is a photo of Maria Gandolfo on the page.
There are also photos of Salvatore Gandolfo and Margherita Cutrone, as well :-)
There appear to be living siblings of Sebastiano as they are only listed as PRIVATE...
Siblings Maria, Lucy, Frank and Joseph are all deceased.

The owner of the family tree is listed as JamesBarish...
You can contact him through Ancestry.com

Hi Marty :-) nice finds!

I believe the poster was looking also for information about her grandmother's side - Sophia Vaccaro [Gandolfo] :-)

T., I'm guessing Casteltermini -- province Agrigento -- region Sicily.
1913 manifest for a Giovanni Vaccaro, last residence and place of birth Casteltermini, destination Brooklyn. Approximate year of birth is correct.

This is amazing!

Just so I got this correct. I'm seeing Margherita Cutrone (mother of Sebatian b.1917) was born in 1898 or 1867? I'm confusing this one. Also I'm seeing Maria Astuto remarries an Angelo Pepi. Did they have children?

Another question is who is this Margherita Dell? Lusic Accordi's parents you have listed as Francesco Accardi and his wife with the last name Dell? This doesn't seem italian but I could be mistaken.

Also, is there any back family for Ida, my grandmother's mother. I see Giovanni Vaccarro parents. Is there anything further for them as well?
