Caterina D'Attellis Birth/Christening in Foggia, Italy?

Postby DanceDiva234 » 19 Jun 2015, 14:57

Hi, I am looking for a birth certificate/christening record for Caterina D'Attellis or Giuseppe D'Attellis. She was born in Foggia, Italy in 1895. Can anyone give me information of her birth? Please do not give immigration information. I already know that information. I need information on who her father and mother were in particular. Her mother's name was Luisa.

Thank you!

1902 ship manifest for Caterina travelling with mother Luisa, a widow, and sibling Giuseppe. Last residence Celenza Valforte.

http://interactive.ancestry.com/7488/NY ... turnRecord

Based on the above manifest and the following birth record for Maria Giuseppa Caterina, a sibling of Giuseppe and Caterina, I believe their father was Michele D'Attellis, born about 1848 and Luisa Iarizza, born about 1854 based on age on manifest. Record number 43, top left.

Child was presented at the town hall on 10 March 1888 by father Michele D'Atellis, forty, a farmer. She was born on the 9th of March 1888 in a house at Via Casale from his wife Luisa Iarizza, a farmer.

Hi Bliff,

Thank you so much! Although Maria is a new name in this search, her two middle names hold significance. If Maria is apart of the family I am looking for, I am assuming she passed away at a young age. From then, I think Luisa may have named her next two children Giuseppe and Caterina after her. That makes sense.

I'll try from there. :)

Yup, they changed their name when coming to America. I have a picture of them from their wedding day.

Have you been able to determine when/where mother Luisa passed? Her surname Iarizza is very rare. Did Luisa remarry after coming to the US?

I have no clue where she may have passed away since every record points in a different direction. Every census I have checked involving her family does not mention her. If she does die in America, I have yet to see a death certificate for her. That is my only reason for thinking she may have went back to Italy after taking her children to America. Although, the latest census that mentions her name is around 1905-3 years after their arrival. After that, there is no mention of her.

Another son they may have had was Francesco/Frank D'Attellis. He was born in Foggia, Italy on Jan 26, 1876. He came to America before his mother. His death was in America on Nov 7, 1945. It mentions his mother being Michele and Luisa.

:) Thank you so much!

I believe this is son Giuseppe's WWI Draft Reg Card from 1917. Note that he says he is supporting his mother and stepfather but does not specify where they are living.

Thank you, I assume his mother was still in America, especially since he says he is supporting her. I doubt they had the money to go back to Italy. Would you think that Luisa had another husband after Michele?

Luisa must have since it says he is supporting his mother and stepfather. His mother was widowed before coming to America. I am assuming she remarried in America.

Jeez, all the questions over the last few months are finally coming together!

For reference, here is the D'Attellis family on the 1905 NY census showing mother Luisa, Giuseppe and Catetina with brother Francesco's family. That would mean Luisa remarried sometime between 1905 and 1917 (the date of son Giuseppe's WWI draft card). I've been checking the New York bride lists on Steve Morse site but haven't found anything yet. Will keep trying.

Thank you so much! I've been looking at possible marriages with the last name Larizza but haven't been successful so far.

I found a possible for Luisa's second marriage.

Name: Louisa D'atello
Gender: Female
Marriage Date: 15 Aug 1905
Marriage Place: Kings, New York, USA
Certificate Number: 6698

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse. ... &ml_rpos=5

Groom??
Name: Antunco Zinn (first name could be Antonio: last name is likely Italian since it would have been unusual for her to marry a non-Italian but I can't figure out what Zinn might haved morphed from)
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 13 Aug 1905
Marriage Place:Kings, New York, USA
Certificate Number: 6698

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse. ... &ml_rpos=1

The certificate numbers (6698) match. It would be worth purchasing a copy of the marriage by clicking on the link.

Here's a 1910 census for Anthony and Louise Dizzinno (second marriage for both, married four years) with children Joseph (a bootblack same as on WWI draft card) and daughter Katherine. Family living at 249 North 8th Street same address as Giuseppe's WWI Draft card.

The surname DiZinno is present in Celenza Valforte.

Bliff, thank you so much for looking up all the information. It really means a lot to me. I am so happy to finally see everything about Luisa's life that I could not find anything on.
