Lappa Family

Postby MLLorre » 21 Jun 2015, 10:22

Hi all...looking for any info about Adalgisa Lappa from the Montegallo region. She emigrated to the US in 1920 and went to Uniontown, PA where she married my grandfather, Gioacchino Lori (and I can find NOTHING about him). Her parents were Enrico and Margherita Lappa. If anyone has any suggestions or knows anything, I'd truly appreciate it!

Thanks,
Mary

Hi Marty...
It's more confusing than that. Lori was the name of an uncle who adopted him, what his true surname was, I have no idea and the family (what's left of it) doesn't know. I can't even get a copy of his death certificate here because I need to give them his parents' names, which I don't know---and the reason I WANT the death certificate. His wife, Adalgisa Lappa, came here in 1920 to Uniontown, PA, yet I can find no record of either of them there....and can find no record of HER parents in Ascoli...I've hit the frustrating point!

Mary :)

Here's his WWII Draft Card. Note he gives name as Joe Angotti Lorrie. Perhaps Angotti was his birth surname. Or the "Joe Angotti" is a corruption of Giacchino. Click to enlarge

Suanj,

Thanks so much for your replies! I'm wondering if she (Adalgisa Lappa) was part of an arranged marriage? Did they do that then? She emigrated 7 years after he did, yet the reason on the ship manifest was because she was 'betrothed to Gioacchino Lori'. He never went back that I'm aware of. Apparently, the uncle he lived with in Montegallo was Antonio Lori, but I've come across a few of those, and none are the right one. I also can't find a marriage date (she got here in 1920, their first child was born in 1922).
I must be doing something wrong...

I did ask one of the few family members left if 'Angotti' meant anything, and she said no. I did some looking to make sure, but I think you're right, Biff---it has to be a corruption of Gioacchino, same as Joseph Akin is on his WW2 draft card. I happened to find their first child's death certificate by accident, because the spelling is way off on that one...can't find a birth certificate for her, though....or a marriage one for them. :(

Hi surely... it was a arranged marriage... most probably the Gioacchino's uncle managed it...
on the ship's manifest Adalgisa seeming single... so she married in Uniontown, PA... but no evidence.. I don't found the record...
it may be that she was married to Montegallo, with proxy marriage .. a few days before of to embark for the USA.. and on the passport she appearing single...
That it could be possible.....

I believe that Angotti is no a corruption of Gioacchino...
Angotti is a italian surname, but no one in Marche region... so it seems rather that he has added it from itself...

My opinion is that LORI was the his legal name, because he left Italy with this name,
and this name was on passport...

if he was adopted or no.. who know? if he was a foundling and had Angotti surname by registrar, and then adopted by Lori family, that is possible also...
the truth is on the Birth act... just by that you can know what was his name at Birth...

I was told that he was adopted by an uncle. Why, I don't know. Never thought to ask when the people who would know were still here...but at that point in my life, when I was that young, it never occurred to me. My dad knew what the original name was, and he remembered letters from Italy from both sides.
I haven't seen any records of passports for either of them. When Gioacchino first emigrated, he went to Kenosha, Wisconsin. There was a Jack Lori there, who my dad called 'Uncle Jackie', but I believe it was a cousin of my grandfather. Can't find any records of him in Kenosha, though. Adalgisa's brother lived in Chicago (Peter Lappa), but I can't find records of my grandparents there, either. After they got married, they settled in Republic, PA, in Fayette County, but darn if I can find any records....
